Small, light, gorgeous knife
My husband got this for me in honor of "buy your wife a sword" month. I've been working in a professional kitchen for awhile and he decided I needed a "tiny kitchen sword." And that's exactly what this is. The Shun 6 in Classic Chef is a gorgeous knife. Crazy sharp straight out of the box, it keeps its edge well with regular honing. If you don't know how to use a honing steel, this knife is worth learning for. It settles into a perfect pinch grip without trying. The balance is lovely, and the light weight makes long prep jobs fly by. The spine of the knife is a little harsh on the index finger... Those with sensitive hands may find it a little austere. I would definitely recommend that chefs with very large hands hold these knives in a shop before deciding, as the handle is slim and well suited for a smaller hand. I personally have a lot of experience caring for carbon steel knives, but if you don't, watch some videos or read up on care... This thing is not made to be chucked in a dishwasher or a utility drawer. In fact, the first thing I did was make a leather sheath so I can safely carry it back and forth to work, since it comes in a cardboard sleeve. Overall, I'm thrilled with the purchase. Based on my experience so far, I think I will be trying the ten inch next!

Perfect knife
Perfect size for my hands and grip. Its sharp, easy to clean, and beautiful. I use one of these in my food truck and I bought one for my son in college. I always recommend Shun knives!

This thing is sharp vs Wusthof and Calphalon
This is my first Shun knife. It is hard to go back to other knives after using this one.Cuts are easy and clean. The knife is light and well balanced and feels good to hold.I have not experienced any chipping that other reviewers mentioned. But I can see the bladeis thinner than my other knives and this knife probably cannot take abuse.Compared to the Wusthof that I own and re-sharpened, the Shun cuts easier.I did go back and sharpened my cheapo Calphalon Kantana knives from 20 years ago with a water stone just to compare. And the Shun is still easier to cut with but not by much. I guess the thinner blade and narrower angle gives the Shun a structural advantage regardless of sharpening on the Wusthof and Calphalon. The tradeoff is the Shun blade feels more delicate than the other knives.I was surprised that sharpening a cheapo knife came close to the Shun. I'm paying a huge premium to getincremental gains in sharpness. So it is a hard decision whether to upgrade my other knives to Shun givenhow expensive they are when I can spend 30 minutes really sharpening cheap knives on a $20 water stonegetting almost the same performance. Then again, I don't cook that much. I can definitely see the premium being worth it for someone who loves to cooks or cooks a lot and is going to use the knife a lot.

Love, love this knife.
Extremely sharp knife just slides easily through food. What a pleasure to use. Built very well , good balance, and beautiful, too. The smaller size (compared to typical chef knives) fits my small hand perfectly and is still large enough for most uses. Definitely worth the price to make preparing a joy.FOR NOVICES: If you are not trained in knife use and care, do make the effort to learn (lots of info on- line). Your knife will work better for you, stay sharp longer, and remain a pleasure for many years. NO STONE OR GLASS CUTTING BOARDS unless you are TRYING to ruin your knife.

Did not meet my expectations
Did not meet my expectations. The design is very cute, the balance is excellent and the size is perfect for my small hand. What did not convince me is the sharpness, I thought it would be very, very sharper and it is not.
