Capital City: The Complete Series

I couldn't wait to receive this series. I worked in a dealing room in the late 70's and this series is late 80's, but still reflects the social and work environment to a T.The quality of the discs are excellent, both in sound and picture. The music was written by Colin Towns, who came from Deep Purple. It brings this series together with its racy theme. Colin also wrote music for Doc Martin, Pie In The Sky, etc.At the end of the day Bankers are people and all the good and bad points are in this series. If you haven't experienced this life , then I recommend it, or buy just to re-live that period.

I vaguely remembered this programme at the time of the original tranmission but was not in a position to watch it in earnest. I wish I had because it is an excellent series based on the workings of a small Investment Bank and the activities of Management and their Floor Traders. There is a host of wonderful characters some you will like and some not, but each episode is well crafted and interesting throughout. My particular favourite episode is the one filmed in the Czech Republic which is fun.My favourite characters are Max (the Swaps expert), Hudson (Legal) and also Leonard the Operations Manager. The rest are good too and surely their top man is the wisest and fairest Banker ever.The DVD package represents the whole output which comprises two series (1989 and 1990) of twenty-three episodes, each roughly fifty minutes, on seven discs.I think this programme could probably have had one more series before all possible storylines had been exhausted. Anyway I couldn’t wait to see each episode and felt fully satisfied having seem them all.

The first series was better. Jimmy's rouge character changed the dynamics of the team. Shame they axed off Jimmy and Wendy. However, I would recommend this fabulous box set to anyone who used to sit down on a Wednesday evening and watch how a fictional financial institution just got on with and made loads of money! 👍🏼

It's, perhaps, unfair to judge a series beyond its true era, but inevitably we are conditioned by what comes later. This series, although not at all bad on its own terms, looks dated by today's standards. Nowadays we have become accustomed to what we think is a high degree of authenticity in TV series, whereas 20 or 30 years ago they were clearly not meant to be more than pure fictional TV entertainment. Some of the older series had more of a cutting edge than others, but basically authenticity was not the main point of the exercise. This, perhaps, is why Capital City looks dated since it has a definite "made for TV" flavour.That said, it's entertaining enough, and just about manages not to overstay its welcome over the two seasons it ran. There is some carry over between episodes, but basically each one is self contained. Most of the characters are believable enough, and the stories fairly light and breezy. I never saw it when it aired (over 25 years ago). I only bought it because of the comments I had read here, and I am glad that I saw it. As far as recommending it however, particularly to anyone who didn't know the '80s, I have my doubts.

I watched season 1 at the time in '89 but not season 2 as I was busy that evening. I loved watching it all again and seeing season 2 as it captures a lot of what it was like to work in the City at that time. It's very 80's and that adds a lot to the retro aspect of it.

Excellent video nice to be able to watch it since it was on the television many years ago. It's just a shame it's aged a bit but it's still good

My wife and i watched this production when it was on television, it has always remained in our mind as an enjoyable series.The DVDof the complete series has not changed our opinion,its still delightful.All the characters are beliveable and having lived through thisera of baggy suits and living for the day,i would reccomend this series.You wont be disappointed.

I missed this series first time around (1989) and heard good things about it so I decided to catch up 30 years on! It is well written and produced with some fine lead actors. The trading floor scenes are fascinating with computers and finance machines of the day and quite funny too with the life-style of the finance wizards, male and female, and their personal and professional crises. It is well worth watching.
