Hewing Contemporary Bowls (Schiffer Book for Woodworkers)

This book was a bit of a let down for me. I was expecting some decent instruction, clear descriptions, etc. Instead, it's a bunch of photographs (albeit nice ones) and very little in the way of useful instruction. Aside from the photos, I got the impression that the authors sat down one weekend and decided to write a book on bowl carving, and completed it by supper on Sunday. That may be unfair, but I think the authors could have gone quite a bit further than what they did.

It is a well written and illustrated book, however, this is a very difficult bowl to make unless you are an expert. I would have liked a list of tools with explanation of how to use them and what they actually do.I will buy more books by the authors since I want to gain as much information to eventually be able to work confidently in wood carving.

I purchased this book for my dad, who is new to hand hewing. He had wanted to begin making doug bowls but wanted to give them a more modern look than those made long ago. This book provides step-by-step instruction along with pictures to detail each step of the process. With his adzes in hand, he is truly enjoying his new hobby.

I am extremely interested in hand hewing bowls from larger hard wood logs. I find Rip and Tammi Mann very helpful in developing my hewing technique.I now own both of their books on hand hewing wood bowls. The Manns treat the subject from the green log to the finished product. They recomend tools that work and techniques that shape and finish beautiful bowls. I have been carving wood for a little over three years and find books like this to be extremely helpful. This book absolutely met all my expectations and more!

A good methodology to follow when creating your own hand carved bowl. Excellent pictures of some very beautiful bowls that are real works of art.
