Magnets are cheap with little attraction
I had this in one of my toilet tanks for over a year. I had noticed how much worse looking the tank looked inside and in the bowl vs my other toilets that have a strong Earth magnet. I took this device out and opened it. I was surprised that the magnets were low quality, low magnetic attraction. These are nothing more than a cheap frig magnet. For this to work these would need to be many times stronger. I use the higher quality magnets on other toilets and they have a positive impact and are keeping the minerals from sticking to the bowl surface. This device lacks the correct magnets.Using magnets to create magnetic water does work to reduce the hard mineral builds up in toilets. It does not soften water but it changes the properties of the hard minerals. The only successful way I found to create magnetic water for a toilet is to take two strong Earth magnets and put them on each side of the toilet water supply pipe, the copper pipe. The magnets I set up are in the direction that attract each other. Then I put some taped over them to hold them in position. The strong magnets want to slide around the copper pipe and connect to each other, so tape is needed. The result is less hard water build up. But this only appears to work if the water is flushed often. Putting on a seldom used toilet does not work, I think the magnetic water loses its properties after some time.

THEY DO WORK on hard water stains. They are not germicidal. Want to clear up the difference.
12/13/16 UPDATE: Just starting to see some mineral build up in one toilet, so these cartridges lasted us not quite 2 years. So I'm back to order new sets today. That's pretty impressive for the minor cost. I do not understand all the negative reviews. These cartridges keep the mineral build up out of our 3 toilets hands down. THEY WORK. They are not meant to "clean" your toilet of everyday use germs, etc. They are meant to keep mineral build up from occurring, which in turn stains from the daily usage. Still need to do regular cleaning. We are pleased as pie with them. Thanks for making them available!1/22/14 Update: Put them into our tanks and hard water stains already gone. These cartridges are the best for hard water. You still need to clean the toilets for the germies!Listen up folks! The name of these cartridges is misleading. They are not toilet bowl cleaners. Yes, you still have to clean your toilets. (And frankly, I think you should! Why would people think they didn't have to clean their toilets?! Gross.) These cartridges DO keep hard water from creating stains that cannot be scrubbed off inside the bowl. We have the most hard water I've seen in my lifetime and do not want salt added to our water to "Soften" it. That's just adding more chemicals. Our hot water heater must be flushed regularly and we have 6 inches of hard water sediment that comes out of it every time. We believe it has something to do with the fact that we live at the end of a cul de sac and for some reason, we think it backs up at our house. None of our neighbors or folks who live in other parts of the subdivision have this problem. We're on our 4th dishwasher in 13 years due to the problem despite using the chemical CLR to remove hard water build up in the dishwasher. All that said, in the first two years we lived here, the rings around the water line of our 3 toilets, you cannot clean them off. And our toilets are cleaned regularly by our "Cleaning Lady" and me. (I like clean.) When I installed these cartridges (2 per tank) in the toilet tanks, the rings that were there actually disappeared in a week or two. The cartridges continued to keep our toilets completely hard water stain free for 3-4 years. (I think they recommend replacing every year, but I figured I'd get as much out of them as I could. As a follow up, just had a plumber out to replace leaky parts and he said I should remove them, chemical, blah, blah. He didn't know what he was talking about but I knew I needed new ones anyway, so I threw them out to appease him. Guess what, in ONE week's time, I have hard water drip stains going down the insides of my bowls already. So I will be ordering a new set right away! To sum it up: (1) These cartridges DO WORK on hard water staining. (2) They are NOT anti-bacterial. (3) And, you still have to clean your toilet bowl if you would like to keep the germ count down. Why wouldn't you? I feel fortunate that Amazon carries these, as my previous source no longer does. So I wanted to put in this review so people will BUY THEM PLEASE! because they do work! Those who are saying they don't work is because they have the misassumption that they clean the germs and such away. You need to handle that yourself! No disrespect intended, just clearing up what they actually do, okay?

So far so good - works for our hard water rings!
I bought these to deal with hard water rings in our toilets. We have well water and have our own septic system, so I don't like to use harsh chemicals to clean. The only thing that really works on hard water mineral rings is scrubbing with a pumice stone - not a fun task and I'm sure it will eventually damage the bowl. We have 3 toilets, so I bought this 2 pack to try. I scrubbed off all the rings with a pumice stone, and cleaned all 3 toilets. I dropped one unit in 2 of the tanks and it's only been 3 weeks, but the 2 toilets with these in the tank still look perfectly clean, while the 1 toilet without it has a ring around the bowl.

They work. Using these for 15 years.
I have bought these for years and they do work. However, they will not removed the stains you already have. Bleaching stains does not work either, it's just a band aid. I turn off the water and then remove all the water from the bowl. I pour water to about 1 inch of vinegar below the iron stain. I the place toilet paper on the stains and get them wet with the vinegar. I lock the door and let it soak about 8 hours to loosen the iron. I buy 180 to 220 dry wall sanding screen and I sand that iron off. Place these in the toilet and you should be good for at least 6 months. If you don't flush the toilet after you urinate the calcium from your urine will cause a ring, so keep that toilet flushed. You can also remove the stain with Behlen's pumice powder.

LIAR LIAR! TOTAL FRAUD!
LIAR LIAR!!!!. This product does absolutely nothing except waste your money and take up space. I can't believe there is anyone that could give this a positive review. I scrubbed my toilet with cleanser and a pumice stone until it was sparkling clean. I then added the ChemFree toilet cleaner. In less than 2 weeks my toilet bowl was just as dirty as before. I left ithe product where it was for over a month and it has never made the slightest difference. THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE TAKEN OF THE MARKET FOR FRAUD!!!!! I added a picture so you can see just how well this product worked. NOT!
