A diamond in the rough. Solid performance

Once in a while, you find a product that exceeds performance while very cost effective. This is it.I build/modify flashlights as a hobby so I am very familiar with leds, their electronics, and behavior (Cree XM-L2, XP-L, XHP35/70, SST40, SBT90.2, osram 1mm1/1mm2 etc). Most the time when you buy cheap led, you get a knock off product that under performs. Cheap eBay/Amazon/China light bars are notoriously known for that. That takes me to these led pods. They are pretty much a direct competitor to the $160 baja design pods and/or $140 diode dynamics C2 pods. These pods state that they use Two Cree XM-L2 10w leds (10w per led) per pod for a total of 20w of power. Cree XM-L2 are indeed 10W leds according to cree’s spec sheet. Upon visual inspection, these pods do look like the use the Cree XM-L2 led. You can tell by the silver around the die. The XM-L T6 (older version) does not have the silver around the die and is instead green. The XM-L2 led should be able to produce aprox 1000lm (at the die) when driven at its full 10w.My initial tests with a power meter and pix meter show that these pods perform very wellPic 1:Readings taken @ 2 min1.4Amps @ 13.1v (18.3w total)Ambient temp: 75FHousing temp: 104F9.15watt per ledPic 2:Readings taken @ 2 min1.42Amps @ 12.5v (17.7w total)Ambient temp: 75FHousing temp: 98F8.82watt per ledNote: I took voltage readings at two diff voltages. Most cars run around 13.2v when the engine is on and 12.5v when just ran from a SLA battery (what I had on hand). But both are still drawing 1.40/1.42 amps, which is consistent (good thing). To take this in another perspective, here are the baja and diode specs for their 2 led pods:Baja designs sport ($109):0.9Amps12w (6w per led)Baba design Pro ($175):1.7a draw24watt (12w per led)Diode dynamics c2 sport ($140):0.6Amp draw (main beam)7w (3.5w per led)I’m not here to tell you which is better or which to buy. These numbers are there for a tangible comparison between actual specs of various pods in its class (although I am a huge DD fan. I run their 43” bar and SS3pro fogs). The third test was done to see how these lights performed after 10 mins of continuous running. How hot does it get? How much power does the thermal management drop the leds’s performance? Turns out it is also very good.Pic 3:Readings taken @ 10 min1.38Amps @ 12.83v (17.7w total)Ambient temp: 75FHousing temp: 148F8.82watt per ledYou can see that they are still performing at full threshold. The thermal limit on a Cree XM-L2 led is 85c (185F) before it melts itself. Although I wasn’t able to measure the die temp, a housing of 148F is pretty good (stable 148F)Another note is that once the leds runs, it will get hot. It is common for the driver to turn down the power of the led to price less output and this less heat. This is in important because we want the led to have a long life. Running a XM-L2 (or any led for that matter) at full power (10w in this case) will significantly shorten the life stand, especially without active cooling like having a HUGE heat sink or fan actively cooling it (think of a computer’s CPU). Plus, these pods are small, so they are limited in the cooling capacity.Having a 10w led running at 8.85w-9.15w is actually very good. And this is considered full power (stable full power).Let’s talk about output. Unfortunately I cannot objectively measure raw lumens. However, if I had to guess, at 9w, these should be able to produce Aprox 800-900lm per led at the die.I can, however, measure the lux and candela at 25ft. Usually you measure lux and candela at 10m (Aprox 30ft), but my garage isn’t that long. This is to serve as a reference.Reading were taken @ 1 min:594lux @ 25ft peak beam intensity34,490cd @ 25ft peak beam intensityThese have your typical spot beam. Which, if that’s what you’re looking for, great.Overall summary:Pros:-Good pods at acceptable power levels.-Good stable power after 10 mins-True 8.85w-9.15w per led-inexpensive (compared to baja or DD).-good quality build and feel (subjective)Cons:-I wish it had more lens options. For example a diffused lens or a driving lens. However, at Aprox $30 a pair, can you really complain? I’m willing to bet I can make the baja designs 2 led lens fit.-No breather ventI have 4 pairs of these and they will be used as side lights (left and right). I will also be replacing the lens with a 20mm diffused pmma lens because I want my side lights to be a diffused light and not a spot.Other thoughts: although these lights feel very well built, only time will tell. For my purposes, I will be using these lights for base camp. And if one breaks, I’m only out $15. Maybe at that point I will be able to test out mfg warranty (does it even exist? Lol).Ofcorse, keep in mind that these test results should be served as a reference from a common [slightly above average] end user. These tests are not lab-grade (I can’t believe I have to even say this).I am also not affiliated with the mfg in any way. I bought all 4 sets like a normal peasant with my own money.(But if any manufacturer wants to send me free stuff to test and try out, I won’t be opposed) #shamelessplug10/03/21 editHave had them for a few months now and they still perform great. I modded them with a 20mm pmma flood lens to use them on the side (see picture). I have 4 pods on the side to light up my side area during camp. They are dimmable.

Bright for their size!

The reviews convince me to buy these, and I'm happy with them. I mounted them on my motorcycle crash bars with a 1" Rubber Cushioned Insulated Clamp (web search it) and some thick rubber electrical splicing tape (web search it). The only negative so far is the shiny brackets and bolts that came with it. I would have preferred them to be black to match the light's housing. I'll live with it, I guess. I could paint them, but I'm done playing with them for now. I have to check them out at night to see how bright they are, but I really wanted them to attract attention from opposing drivers.

Compact, bright and well built.

Installed on ez-go golf cart used for maintenance. These as headlights and a lightbar for worklights make for an easy way to safely get to the job site. Easy to install. Simple inline 5a fuse to a 16v connector on the cart's harness and we were in business. These are beamed headlights and not floodlight like the light bar meaning the beam is narrow. But with two of these you'll get excellent illumination in front of wherever you've installed them.

Small but fairly mighty

I am happy with them. They are pleasantly bright for the price and have held up well from a wet PNW year (no moisture in the lenses). Install was easy, especially if you have aux switch setup.very happy and plan to buy a few others

very bright for this size even daytime

love it on my 1999 Rav4

Good for the price

They are decent. My biggest issue is that they turn on the mount pretty easily. They're not the brightest lights out there either, but for the price they're what I expected and decent enough.
