Great blinds for reducing energy consumption & for darkening a room
To reduce expenses and to help protect the environment, in early 2021 our household started taking a number of measures to cut our energy consumption. Those measures have proven successful: total 2021 electricity consumption in our single-family, detached home in the US SE was about 8,000 kWh (3,200 of which was for HVAC), compared to about 11,000 kWh annual average in previous years. [UPDATE on 1/1/23: our total electricity consumption in 2022 dropped even further to just 5,500 kWh (1,600 of which was for HVAC) for the year. We have HALVED our electricity consumption. Huge savings.]Much of our attention has been on our windows. In addition to improving energy efficiency, we have thought about privacy and, in certain rooms, blocking bright light (to allow for sleep by day…). With all this in mind, we are very pleased with our Grandekor cellular shades. And they’re beautiful, as well. While researching the energy efficiency of different window coverings, we learned that cellular shades are given particularly high marks. One word of caution: open the packaging very carefully so as to avoid cutting or otherwise damaging the network of strings at the top of the unit. I was not careful – though not rash – and ended up having to figure out and fix a bowl-of-spaghetti mess of tangled strings before I could hang the shades. Here are some other products we purchased at Amazon that we can recommend to those interested in cutting home energy consumption:STATINT Window Film Privacy One Way Daytime Mirror Static Non-Adhesive Solar Glass Film Heat Control: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07W3VCZNF Dramatically reduces amount of direct sunlight, gives privacy by day, and protects from shattering.RYB HOME Room Darkening Patio Door Curtain, Hanging Room Divider Screen Insulated Drapes Privacy Wall Panel: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07D32DJ2V , as well as RYB HOME Blackout Curtains & Drapes - Total Privacy Thermal Efficiency Backdrop Curtains for Bedroom Room Divider Vertical Blind Living Room Patio Sliding Glass Door: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B077SZRBNJAootek solar lights 120 LEDs with lights reflector, 270 degree Wide Angle, IP65 Waterproof, Security Lights for Front Door, Yard, Garage, Deck (4 pack): https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07NQ4L1SB , as well as Solar Lights Outdoor,WWimy 210 LED 2500LM Motion Sensor Lights with Remote Control, 3 Heads Security LED Flood Lights, IP65 Waterproof, 270° Wide Angle Illumination Wall Lights with 3 Modes (2 Packs): www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08T9F2MM1 Purchased in August 2021, these lights continue to work well here in the SE, saving us over 150 kWh/year. Thanks to these readings, we have established a smarter, more energy-efficient way of ventilating our crawlspace. They also helped us see that our attic needed additional ventilation in the roof, prompting us to purchase the following.4 SEASONS Solar Powered Polycarbonate Vent, Weatherproof Design, Quietly Cools Up to 500 Sq Ft, 400 CFM: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DMSCPJA

These shades are easily double the quality of Hunter-Douglas at less than one-tenth of the cost
Long story short, we had spent a significant dollar amount on the window treatments for our new house two years back. We decided to go with the "trusted" name-brand manufacturer since the name Hunter-Douglas was supposed to be synonymous with quality. Fast forward two years, and I can resoundingly say that Hunter-Douglas is little more than overpriced junk bolstered by a name which may have, in previous decades, evoked some semblance of quality, but clearly no longer. With even careful use, the Hunter-Douglas Duet shades wrinkled and tore like cheap papier-mâché. The pleats started to come apart at the seams with very minimal use, as I had rarely up until then raised or closed the blinds since they were in a mostly unused room. Keep in mind that these non-blackout shades cost nearly $600 each at the time, and they felt like very cheap and very thin low-quality paper. It's no wonder they tore so easily with minimal use. The Hunter-Douglas affiliated installer that I ordered them from was also no help and likely was in cahoots with Hunter-Douglas to deny any warranty action for their cheap, flimsy paper shades. Imagine the profit that installer and the manufacturer must make off of unsuspecting consumers like us.After receiving a ridiculous quote of $500 to replace one shade from the scummy installer, I decided to take a chance and buy these replacement shades off Amazon (like the saying goes, fool me once...) -- I had low expectations since these promised to be dual-colored blackout shades which visually appeared similar to what would have cost over $700 from Hunter-Douglas, at 8% of the cost. Yes, these replacement shades cost me all of $55 each compared to the $700 that Hunter-Douglas was trying to charge. After receiving them not two days later courtesy of Prime, I immediately disassembled the old shades and installed these new ones, a process which took less than 5 minutes per side.Well, let me tell you that, visually, these shades are superior to the Hunter-Douglas ones that they replaced. Not only do they filter out more light, the pleats are significantly more numerous (even though the measured height for the Amazon one was actually less than that of the Hunter-Douglas one) and they are of heavier stock. I accidentally pushed on one of the pleats during installation and there was no discernable wrinkling or damage to the fabric. Look at the comparison on the photos; the Hunter-Douglas pleats look like a complete joke compared to the Amazon ones. The only leg up that Hunter-Douglas has is that their valence is somewhat better looking as they completely cover the mounting brackets, whereas the Amazon ones do not. But at a 1000% increase in price? Ridiculous. The only other fault that I could see on the Amazon shades is that the opening/closing mechanism was a little bit stiff at first, which quickly loosened up after a few tries. Otherwise, it is a clear winner in the price-to-performance department. Don't be a sucker and fall victim to these shameless Hunter-Douglas installers who are making beaucoup bucks off of consumers to line their own coffers and to finance their own pools. Save a significant amount and go the Amazon route and have the same, if not better, quality window treatments. Installation is a snap and measuring the correct widths takes only a little bit of due diligence.

Easy to install and they look great!
Our grandson, nine months old, visits regularly. These shade are in his room, the baby room. During nap time they block out the light from the windows in daylight hours. They are very effective. If you can use a tape measure and a screwdriver or screw gun, the installation takes about 15 minutes. I am very pleased!

It did the job, but...
We had purchased 4 smaller (36") versions of this blind before, with which we were pleased. This one (40") has some issues:1. Harder to pull down2. It doesn't stay all the way down when closed - maybe it needs a little bit of "training"3. When pulled down, it twists from the horizontal plane on one side and it is not parallel with the window, even though the top (mounting) is. I'm working on how to compensate for the twist. On the positive side, it is extremely easy to install. It appears reasonably made. It darkens the room pretty good.Resonable price when compared with what you can order online from other sources.

Easy to install.
Dark/blackout is like no other. Easily installed. Used for our bedroom which faces East. We have zero issues sleeping WELLpast sunrise. Highly recommend.Only downside I found is that these blinds are popular and some sizes are not always readily available. Be patient, it’s worth it.

These shades are 💯
We love the new shades. They are super easy to install and the blackout keeps our bedroom so much darker than our previous blinds. They look nice, fit perfectly and are a great value.
