Emotional Intensity in Gifted Students

and its sad, because these kids need and deserve every opportunity ...
This book helped me understand my son just a little bit more. We've had such a tough year, going through the gambit of evaluations, determining a couple of diagnosis'. I've been reading so many books, trying to learn on how to be a stronger parent to help my son succeed. I identified the most with the words written in this book, and I am so thankful that I read it. Sadly, I just don't think there are enough "services" to help gifted kids, or enough training in our general educational systems. Special schools are so expensive, and its sad, because these kids need and deserve every opportunity to succeed. They're a rare breed, mine with an IQ of 153, I'm told one in every one thousand people exist with an IQ that high. But we keep focusing on all the quirky behaviors that surround his intensity. He just doesn't fit into the normal box that society expects him too. Great book, well written, friendly and easy to read, Thank you, Ms. Fonseca.

Clear and straight foreward with little jargon. A clear ...
Clear and straight foreward with little jargon.A clear and straightforeward book that has little jargon, so is very helpfull for parents to understand the underlying rmotions and frustration gifted children have to lrarn to deal with, as medication can be often counter productive. With the appropriate counselling help gifted children have the ability to recognise the signs and learn to control their frustration episodes. Unfortunately often defining this neurological sympton by a name such as Autism or Asperges brcomes a negativeconitation that some people use to brutilise thegifted person concerned, when they react differently from other people i a give learning ivironment. It is important that teacher who are fortnate to have gifted children in their classrooms understand the source of their students intellectual frustration and encourage them to emphatically control that frustration for the benifi tof the whole class. Being able to see a concept from another perspective can be benificial toeverybody.

Great content, but needs a good editor
The content is good , both the general explanation of intensity in gifted folks and the specifics on how to deal with its manifestations in daily life. For that, it is definitely worth reading. That said, the writing is not stellar, and the flaws are distracting. There are numerous errors including subject and verb not being in agreement. Sometimes word are used incorrectly. Many sentences would benefit from edits for length and clarity.

full cover of all issues
This book arrived on time, packaged very well and mostly, informative. The book is an easy read, offers enough information and examples for the parent/teacher to follow. The book covers all areas of learning impediments and explosive feelings in children. It gives advice on all areas of explosive feelings which the parents, teachers, and other professionals should and could help the child/children. If you think that one book has all the answers - think again. But, I own many books and this is one of the few that covers three-quarter of the issues that I have gone through with my child. Nowadays, giftedness is not a term used anywhere, but guess what, your child can be gifted with learning disabilities. The learning disabilities is really not a problem with learning per se, but a deterrent to learning which is still viewed as a learning disability. I know because my child has it. Good luck!

Great for Parents, Teachers, and Adults Who Were Gifted Children
Reading this book for a friend and her son. I was a gifted child who didn’t learn to develop many of the emotional tools outlined in this book until adulthood. It would have been so helpful to have these tools in high school and college. So glad resources like this exist! The book is well-written and well-organized with ample resources for parents and teachers.

Changed my whole household!
This book is amazing. My three year old son has been acting out, and we have tried everything. I mean everything. I have a doctorate in education and a degree in childhood psychology, and I could not figure out what was happening. I had never even heard of emotional intensity in gifted students. Unfortunately, educators are taught that gifted kids do not need special services or any interventions, since they typically aren't a bother and pass all of the standardized tests. When I read this book, everything clicked. It matched my son's EXACT behaviors, and some of the tips she has provided completed turned our household around. Many of the tips are designed for older children, but I was able to adapt some of the strategies for my three year old. This book has been a lifesaver, and it will be one that I refer to for my son's whole childhood. If you have an intense, intelligent child, this book is a must. I now understand my son and appreciate his giftedness and emotions!

Kindle Version you get what you pay for
I enjoyed the content of this book. It was helpful to me to see how giftedness encompasses the whole child and not just "book smarts". The parenting advice was certainly good for ANY parent, but I found it helpful to think it through in terms of dealing particularly with my "intense" child. It is as titled specifically dealing with teaching coping strategies for their emotions. If you're looking for an all-encompassing book I highly recommend "A Parents Guide to Gifted Children". I bought the kindle version and as other reviewers have said, there are a lot typos and omissions. However for such a significantly cheaper price it didn't bother me as I was still able to get the gist (perhaps that means I'm not "gifted", ha).

helpful book
There is lot of good information in this book that has been helpful for me to understand my son better, along with ways to help him with his big emotions. The kindle version I read had several grammatical errors in every chapter.

Enormously helpful
This was the first book I found on the subject of Gifted Children and I have to be honest and say that having since read a number of other books, this is the only one I return to frequently. Ms Fonseca writes directly to parents in a clear, non-academic manner. She clearly understands what it is like to be a parent of a gifted child as well as understanding the child's behaviour. The advice in this book, particularly on changing the focus of helping the children from the standard instructional method to coaching has been enormously helpful to me.

Good resource
A good resource, but not enough to make real progresses. I like the partition into 3 parts. Doesn't replace the work with a professional though.

Every parent with gifted child should have this book.
While reading this book I found allot of information which is very helpful in dealing with the emotional roller coaster associated with gifted children. Very informative. One of those books where you keep saying, "that is exactly what he is like" OMG!
