This is a brilliant film. Modern gangster classic. As good as Get Carter and other similar films. Reeves is very good in this.

One of the best American action movies in quite some time!
I don't know how it's happened but, out of a frankly ludicrous premise, a first-time director has crafted one of the most impressive Hollywood action movies in a long time.John Wick (Keanu Reeves) is a man grieving for the loss of his wife after a long, debilitating illness. His outwardly calm and quiet demeanour masks the rage that he's feeling inside which only peeks out when he's recklessly flinging his muscle car around a track. John Wick loves this car, he loves it as much as the puppy he's just received from his wife - a last gift arranged before her death that she hoped would give him a reason to go on. One night his house is broken into by Iosef Tarasov (Alfie Allen), the thuggish son of a Russian gang boss (Michael Nyqvist) - Wick is beaten, his dog killed and his car stolen. Iosef has made a very big mistake though, he did not know who Wick was and therefore did not kill him when he had the chance. John Wick, though retired, remains a legend in the criminal underworld, he was the most dangerous of hitmen who always got the job done and tore through anything and anyone in his way to do it. Iosef has now presented himself as a new target and a reason for Wick to come out of retirement and exercise his rage!'John Wick' should, in no way, work as well as it does. A hitman comes out of retirement to take revenge on the people who stole his car and killed his dog, given to him by his dying wife? Surfer dude, Keanu Reeves is your hardened killer? A first-time director? How does this work?It works because everyone knows what they're making and whilst the script is uneven at best and you could argue it ultimately cops out, it is smart enough to spend its act first building up the character of Wick and setting up the stakes. It also makes the brave decision to hold back on what you've come to see, the first proper action scene does not come until about 30 minutes in which is almost unheard of nowadays. By that time, you've heard so much about Wick's past deeds that you're eager to see him get to work. The film also creates an interesting, hard-boiled world for these criminals to inhabit, they have their own currency, a hotel where all criminals are safe and no business is permitted - it feels quite Tarantino-esque in places.Really though, this is all about the action and when it comes, it comes in spades.Whilst I've always been a huge action movie fan, I've been routinely disappointed with the action movies coming out of Hollywood as of late. Whilst the odd gem is uncovered if you dig for them (usually in the low-budget arena) more often than not, they're over-directed dreck that's shot and edited to cover the fact that whatever Hollywood star can't do their own stunts and fight scenes. But not so with 'John Wick'!Directing for the first time, stuntman Chad Stahelski keeps the action scenes clear and comprehensible - there's no music video cutting or shakeycam here. Keanu, having trained in Martial Arts for his work on the 'Matrix' films and his own directing effort,'Man of Tai Chi,' is great here and clearly does a lot of his own stuntwork and fighting. The action, whilst very slick, is also quite, quite brutal - a mixture of MMA and gunplay - this is headshot city!Whilst Reeves gives this role his all and comes alive during the action scenes , he's only really serviceable when it comes to the drama - when he is required to stretch for strong emotions he just can't get there. To be fair to him though, some of the dialogue he's given is horrible to the point that I couldn't see anyone pulling off those lines. Thankfully, the director has made the wise decision to surround him with a surprisingly solid cast of character actors. Willem Defoe, Patrick Kelly, Ian McShane, John Leguizamo and Lance Reddick all pop up in surprisingly small roles to take care of the thesping, leaving Reeves to concentrate on doing his action thing.Ultimately, when I think of 'John Wick' I am reminded of another one of my favourite Hollywood action films - 'The Replacement Killers.' The both have fairly ludicrous, bare-bones plots - with just enough there to string a bunch of action scenes together. They're filled with familiar characters and plot shenanigans, you've seen it all before. But they know what they are, they know what you've come to see, they give it to you in spades without insulting your intelligence and don't overstay their welcome. John Wick is a lean, mean action thrill-ride and I, for one, can't wait to take it again!

And they call it puppy love......(POSSIBLE SPOILERS)
John Wick is a mob hit man who left that life after falling in love with a woman.5 years later, his wife dies and to make sure he's not alone, she arranges for a dog to be brought to him after her death.A few days after he receives his new companion, a group of men wanting to steal his car, break in and beat him up and kill his dog. When he recovers, he sets to get the ones who killed his dog. He learns that the leader is the son of his former employer. And the man, wanting to protect his son, tries to take care of Wick, but once a killer, always a killer. There's still life in the old dog yet......,John Wick is one of those strange films that comes out of nowhere and smacks you right in the face, it's an unexpected gem of a movie. The makers of the movie know that Reeves can't act, hence the limited dialogue he has, but also know that he can carry a film like this, so the endless set pieces look brilliant too.And for Reeves, its a win win situation. He hasn't been in a decent, big release film for some time now, and here, he proves he still has it. Screen presence that is, not acting chops.Plus its one of those films that just doesn't try too hard to be anything other than it is, a revenge thriller, plain and simple. What is clever is that it's not just the dog Wick is peeved about, it's the fact that this was the last thing his wife gave him, and for Wick, the dog signified ease of the grieving process, and her legacy would sort of continue every time he looked in the puppy's eyes.If your a huge dog lover, be prepared to be upset, that's all I'm saying on that matter, but rest assured, the punishment fits the crime, over and over, and over again. Its a very slick affair, the action is effortlessly cool, and the nightclub scene, is one of the highlights of the whole movie. At times, the movie reminded me of 'Wanted', especially when it was set in the strange hotel for hit men, and then other times, it reminded me of 'Crank' because of its bizarre characters, and bonkers narrative. If you are a fan of Reeves, here's the movie you've been waiting for side that awful rave in Zion, for others, its a visual feast, all style over substance, with some great support from the likes of McShane, Dafoe, and even Alfie Allen. Its Most Excellent, and never once Bogus...
