Requires more investment for performance
i bought it, because i had laptop hdd 2.5 inch and wanted to use it as a NAS drive.i searched for options.1-use synology solution(around 17K at the time of purchase)2-do it diy with some old cheap machine(depends on the budget)1-synology-setup was easily but performance of the disk was not ok. synology os also complained that disk is not tested for performance.i setup the synology as per synology documentation but struggled to get the needed performance as i wanted to run VM's in smb share.media server was very good and usb sharing was OK.also i was limited to 1Gbps lan.2-DIY-1 used raspberry pi5 8gb(around 11K that time) model with ubuntu and tplink powered usb hub(around 1.5K) and usb 2.5G realtek adapter(around 2.5K) and same internal 2.5 inch hdd.setup smb via ubuntu and this time peek speed was around 1.5Gbps.so i would recommend synology if we can invest in a good 3.5 inch hdd recommemded by synology.for used disk such as laptop hdd .i would recommend DIY setup.Above was my personal practical experience.but software wise synology is good.we can use this to join to domain, do sync, user home directories, tftp server etc.i later on realized that i just needed SMB most of the time which ubuntu was sufficient.also DIY is good when we have knowledge where to find what and better hardware of course.
