Powerful writing
Rohypnol packs a punch. This short, taut novel features a group of young Australians who use Rohypnol to commit date rape. They are bad people; they know that they are committing crimes but don't seem to see anything wrong in what they do. Their concern is only for being caught, not for what they are doing. And as the novel progresses, it seems that they don't always stop at date rape. Some of the group, at least are schoolkids. The unnamed narrator is befriended at school by the uber-manipulative Thorley and introduced to The Rape Squad - which also includes Uncle, Troy and Harris. They are pretty well fleshed out characters - particularly Thorley and Troy - and act from different motives. They have an internal logic of sorts that shocks, right up to the last pages. Andrew Hutchinson drip feeds new information at just the right time to move on the plot, but also to leave the reader constantly re-evaluating the main characters. Sometimes we almost feel sympathetic to them, only to have that sympathy thrown back in our faces. The imagery is very real and the language is plain. There is no attempt at euphamism - the bald details of the rapes and attacks are set out clearly. The impacts are visible. There are no happy endings. As the narrator says: "We are bad people. Fact: bad people do bad things. Nothing personal". Yet for such a violent book, it is extremely compelling. The shock carries you through the violence with a fascinated horror. One top tip, though, is don't read the book on a train. The cover will guarantee you get some very strange looks from your seat opponents.

An Eye Opening, Well Conceived Work of Literary Art
Andrew Hutchinson is in my opinion a Literary Genius. Rohypnol is a heart wrenching read for any Father raising a daughter. As Mr Hutchinson says himself, "It is not for the faint of heart". The language and plot are troublesome, but are necessary to build the scenes and the characters that are portrayed. Though a work of fiction, this is a very "Real" and disturbing set of truths. A must read if you have children!
