How do you clean this mat or just remove dirt smudges from it?

I personally use laundry detergent to take off dirt and stains.

Does it smell like petroleum?

It has the common neoprene-like smell. It dissipates though. One could wash it and hang dry to help eliminate faster if desired. It didn’t bother me as I have a lot of Built products that smell at first. Neoprene has a distinct smell.

can you put it in the washing machine?

Not sure I only hand washed it and that worked great.

Im seeing reviews stating that the dimensions of the lotr mat are not as advertised. is this accurate? if so, what are correct dimensions?

The map is zoomed in way more than you want it to be. THE LONELY MOUNTAIN ISN'T ON THE MAT. Also the Seller ships it folded instead of rolled so mine has fold marks that lift off the desk 1 year into using it. 1 out of 10 would not do again.
