Very nice looking Katana (mail opener). Blade is not sharp per se, in the sense of cutting you, but is plenty sharp to open letters. I haven't tried, but my guess is it could cut through boxing tape? The only concern I had was how tough it was to initially pull out of Saya (blade case). I thought it might have been glued in by accident, it was so tight. I was worried I was gong to break it when I was pulling to open it. Needless to say, by the pictures, it opened, and now is easy to slide in and out of Saya. Very sturdy and great value for the money spent.

Bought this as a gift for my hubby (paired with a history book about Japanese swords) and he absolutely loved it. The sword is surprisingly really well made for how inexpensive it is, and he loves that it comes with its own little display. The sword is actually fairly heavy for its size, which also makes it feel more expensive and well made than it might be. It's small enough that it fits perfectly on a bookshelf in our home - still a statement piece without taking up too much room (and also attractive enough to go with pretty much any decor). It came looking exactly like the picture. You have to assemble the display yourself and the display is a little wobbly, but if it's on a shelf it's stable and won't get knocked around. The blade isn't as sharp as say a chef's knife, but do you really want it to be when all you're doing is opening packages or envelopes with it? And for us we never use it; it's decoration more than anything. All in all, a great gift. Would highly recommend for any samurai sword fanatics in your life.

I like the way it looks and it has a nice length to it but... I don't use it to open letters. The blade is short and stubby not long and elegant like a real sword. It's also really hard to remove from the sheath. It looks good on my shelf and compliments some of the other things I have displayed near it, but I don't use it. I was disappointed.

I liked it more for decoration, than to actually use it.

Great desk toy. It looks great and is surprisingly pretty high quality... my dad got a similar one that was roughly the same size from another brand, and his letter opener turned out to be pretty garbage with cheap plastic materials and weak metal used for the blade. This thing is the opposite, although it is a little dull. It'll open letters kind of sloppily in its dull state, so make sure you sharpen it with a standard knife sharpener and you'll be in business.
