Are the soft-edged versions in fact different in thickness than the standard self-warming blankets (XL)?

I bought the little one, not quilted and it really didn't work. I don't know about the quilted ones.

Could you use this AND straw for outside house, with no electricity it shouldn’t cause a problem right?

It is just their body warmth that keeps them warm. This pad just insulates their heat. I purchased 3 of these pads for the 3 cat houses for 3 feral cats. I placed straw on top of the pad and they adapted to it right away. One of the mats is placed on top of straw on the ground, and then more straw on top of the pad. (behind a pallet leaning against the house) He has burrowed his way down to the pad and much of the straw is surrounding the pad.. He continues to sleep there on the pad. Obviously these seem to be working for them.

Could work for a cage or if you have a dog that would just sit still. The fabric is quite stiff.

The one I received came in a bag that was open- because the item I ordered was black you could see that a gerbil or something had already been on it before it was put back in the bag and returned.I returned as if I put out for cats and it smells of a different animal they're liable to scent everywhere!I am not sure if the fabric of this is the best- I guess it depends on the animal you have. It feels quite stiff. It might work better for a dog that just plops down and stays in one place or if it was used to line a cage. It wouldn't have worked for where I intended it.At the same order I also oredered Furhaven waterproof and self heating throw blanket for dogs & cats. It's like a really big soft sherpa on one side and soft on the other- I ordered the large one for the back seat of my car and then I returned this item and ordered two of the smaller sizes for the front seats of my car. I feed a colony of cats and some jump in for a snooze- self heating means we all stay cosy in cooler weather.
