Awesome little fella!
I wanted something that would allow me to get a uke-cum-banjo sound for some Irish folk songs. I didn't want to learn a new instrument for this so I bought this. And it is perfect.I can use all the guitar chord shapes (although obviously they're a fourth up in pitch) so it was immediately playable and usable. The quality is pretty good. It isn't a high end instrument and that's apparent, but it is better than I expected for the price. There are no dead frets or sharp fret ends and the intonation is pretty good for such a short scale. The tuners are fine, though not brilliant, and the neck is very playable. The only downside is the supplied strings. They are not great, but they are usable. If you are looking for a great little instrument for a bit of fun or to add to your collection, you probably won't regret getting one of these.

Quality MIni Guitar - Great for Travel
This guitar does not disappoint - a Yamaha product, it is very well made and set up. You will need to adjust to the small fretboard but the sound quality is great. I have taken it on many trips and even played it in the car.I would think it is also perfect for a child. Much better than a ukulele as you do not have to learn different chords. As this instrument has 6 strings, you get the full harmony and a much fuller sound.Comes with its own bag. I would highly recommend.

It's a real instrument, not a toy.
For the money, this is a superb instrument. It is not a toy. Niether is it a childs guitar, though would be a wise choice if thinking of getting your offspring interested in playing. Set up playable from the box, there's no sore fingers, and none of the tuning or intonation problems which can put off even the most determined of players from the start and leave them thinking the guitar is not for them. I play for fun, and this little beauty is fun. Tonally sweet, and with surprising volume for its size I have hardly put it down since I got my fumbling mits on it. Consequently I have been able to annoy anyone who was unfortunate enough to remain within earshot with my repetitions of all the bits of tunes I have learnt over the years in as many styles as I am capable, to my utter delight. I promise I will use this little instrument to learn something all the way through... one day.... honest. The reason I haven't given the full five star rating is five stars is perfection. I don't mark like a soppy Strictly judge. Having had a quick strum I took it into my workshop and put in some abalone dot fret markers to give me a clue where my sausage fingers were going. The nut was fitted and cut well enough, but there was room for improvement. I wanted to increase the string spacing, but the nut was cut that well there was no leeway, though the fingerboard is wide enough to facilitate it. Carved a new nut with wider spacing from a bone blank. While the strings were slacked off I checked the fret levels. Again, nearly there, but not perfect, so only a quick stoning, dress and polish required. Bridge saddle and height was fine. Oiled the fingerboard, which was a bit on the dry side, tuned it up, and hey presto... five stars. Love it to bits.Value for money wise, this was really five stars straight from the box. Like all budget instruments, costs are kept reasonable by reducing the time on final set up in the factory, which is why there are still guitar technicians out there scraping a meagre living improving the set up of said items for anyone with enough nouse to realise their instrument has the potential to really be very good, rather than average.... Sorry to go on, but I was one of those technicians in a previous existence, and still keep my hand in when required.Love it. Highly recommend it for anyone. If you're thinking about buying a guitarlele, buy this one. It's the best one out there by far for the price. And thanks GAK, excellent service, packaging and product, as usual.

Great little instrument
This is the second Yamaha GL1 I have bought.Honestly, there's a lot here for a guitarist or a ukulele player. The tone is great, the treble strings sound as they should and you get a surprising amount of bass on the lower bass strings. The matt finish is also nice, it looks especially good on the sunburst model as you can see the real wood beneath the usual surface and it looks pretty good.Good things:Sounds great has a well-balanced tone and has a fast response to the string. The fretwork is excellent and didn't have any rough edges.Binding on the edge of the guitar is a lovely touch, adds a real feeling of qualityThe sunburst effect is great too, my good lady commented on how pretty it was.The strings that come supplied are not terrible.Bad ThingsThe action is a little high. But a few minutes with a file and concentration takes care of that. Just don't take too much off!The strings are close together. Bit of a no-brainer, but I have big hands, and its a squeeze. But that's part of the challenge. It's not a loud instrument. To really make it yell you have to pick hard. But, good for conditioning the fingers. All in, worth every penny and I would recommend it to everyone who wants to try something new.
