The Artscroll English Tanach: Stone Edition: The Jewish Bible (ArtScroll (Mesorah)) Paperback – March 25, 2011

It's a great and beautiful Tanakh. The cover is decorated and firm, the pages aren't too thin, and the commentary from Rashi and other Rabbis helps you understand and interpret the passages better. It also contains so many in-depth notes, graphs, and maps in the back. This IS the Tanakh if you're looking for an all English one.

This Artscroll Tanach is simply amazing! Looks beautiful and has a wealth of background information and commentary/contextual footnotes. I spend as much time reading the notes as I do the actual scripture. It provides so much context and makes many previously confusing passages comprehensible. A true joy to study!

I purchased the hardback version of this text and it has so far met all expectations. The book is beautifully assembled with a marker tassel and the pages are premium book paper instead of onion pages which increases the life of the text. The only thing I see as a fault is the text is normal size font so those who have trouble reading normal print will have issues with this. The Tanach is laid out as a good study companion with scripture assistance footnotes clearly separated on the bottom of each page, and so far is a smooth translation to modern English. Each chapter is distinctively marked with both the English name as well as the Hebrew name and a short summery before getting into the scripture. The book is by no means a hindrance to carry nor is it very heavy unlike some books I have come across concerning scripture. I am by no means a translator of ancient Hebrew so I can't have an opinion on how correct the translation to modern English is. But compared to the 4 to 5 translations that the modern Holy Bible has gone through with losing some of its meaning and integrity by crossing different languages I do have to admit that it is by far the easiest for a laymen to understand. An example of this is present in the common KJV which started as thus: Hebrew - Greek - Latin - German - English which with each translation something is lost or changed because of language barriers as well as names spellings because of additions or deletions of letters. I would have to give this works a 5 star rating of ease of use, the non complexity in understanding the wording (ease of translation), and the over all quality of the materials used in this version of the Tanach construction it is well worth the price.

First, to answer the questions I had.1. Yes, it's a hardback book with a leather covering. Still, very nice.2. It's bonded leather, but it has a nice look and feel. I can't attest to durability at this time.3. The print is small bur legible, and the rabbinical notes are unobtrusive.I also own the JPS Tanakh. However, that translation is virtually indistinguishable from the NRSV Old Testament. I wanted a unique and different take. This delivers.The Rabbinical notes are largely unnecessary, but very useful in a few tricky spots. The poetic writings maintain an artful flow in the English language.The size is very comparable to a standard Bible with minimal cross refences or study notes. Hence, this is a very portable copy suitable for travel or carrying to Synagogue or what have you.If you're a fan of the Tanakh, or simply wanting a more literal translation of the Old Testament that remains true to the Hebrew language, I highly recommend this work of art.

There’s a reason why Orthodox Shul’s use ArtScroll. There are no other translations like it. Not only is this true regarding the Tanakh, but also Siddur’s, Talmudic writings etc. Another great thing about ArtScroll is they include commentaries in their works.The Tanakh I received is good quality and came in the size that is advertised in the description (8.3 in. in length). I saw some other reviews that said the ones they received were small and they were hardly able to read the print. I think they may have gotten a pocket edition by accident.

I of course love my Tanach . I knew the print was small . I wear bifocals , I can read it fine .I like paperback; because it’s more comfortable holding it.Very happy

The entire Artscroll project is a wonder of scholarship. You really must admire Rabbi Nosson Scherman's navigation of so much complexity and controversy, to produce, again and again, guidance through Tanakh that's eye-opening, stimulating, and beautiful. The translation here is vivid. No matter what your religion, this will serve you well as a version of what we Christians sometimes call "The Old Testament." Btw if you want a fully "Christianized" version, I recommend the New Jerusalem Bible as the best optimization of both accuracy and readability. It will, of course, include the New Testament. So why only 4 STARS? This volume appears to have a glued—not sewn—binding! The Artscroll Hebrew/English Tanakh is sewn—and so is every other Artscroll book I own. What is up with this? I hope it's clear to some who read these words: Binding the Word of God "impermanently" communicate disrespect. Let's see this re-issued with a sewn binding—not as a "giant paperback that happens to have hard covers"—and this will be a worthy entry in the great Artscroll project.

I bought this Tanach primarily for the size. It's exactly as the one I have at home, but it's very heavy. This one is much lighter and smaller.Portability is a big plus as I can take it with me, and pick up where I left off.And, it's so beautiful.What can I say....you will not be disappointed. Shalom.
