Take a flat screw driver . Poke it into the seal and pry up. Easy to do.

Will this work on a 100 year old banister staircase?

the refinisher dissolves varnish so if the item is 100 years old it is finished with varnish and it will refresh and remove move of th varnish ready for a new top coat. I use this with most antique restorations ( original finish 1950s and older.)

How would this work on ornamental details in the wood

Yes, it works in detail areas. It just takes a long time. Use with pieces of extra fine steel wool.

How does this product compare to mineral spirits? Is it a better alternative?

Totally different product. Mineral spirits are for thinning oil based finishes and can be used to clean prior to finishing. Minwax furniture refinished dissolves the old finish and redistributes it to eliminate scratches and bare spots.
