I've had a problem with this subwoofer refusing to come out of standby. Any suggestions?

The S8 does have a minimum volume level before it will "wake up" from standby. If you turn the volume up on the speakers or from the source you're using until you hear the sub kick in, you can then turn the volume back down to where you want it to be and the sub will stay awake.

would you rather go with cheaper yamaha or polk audio subwoofer that are $100 each? $350 for audioengine a little overwhelming :)

I don't have a Yamaha or Polk subwoofer so I can't compare. However, I am more than satisfied with the audioengine sub as it provides a very clean and tight bass response that I can feel.

going to be sitting this on the floor next to my desk ,there is a rug in this room would the rug cause a problem since the speaker is underneath

Actually, the rug makes a good dampener. Mine sits on a tile floor and has a tendency to move around due to the vibration of the downward firing sub.

Has anyone used the S8 with Audioengine P4 passive speakers? If so, I'm trying to figure out how you interconnect the amp, P4s and S8?

If you want to run the S8 with passive speakers you will have to connect it to your pre amp or amplifier. So your amplifier would need to have an rca out that goes to the S8. What type of amplifier are you using to power the P4s?
