Does it kill fruit flies?

It will if you are quick enough to catch them with it. This particular model is good for smaller flies because the mesh is finer. We have found that with some other makes,the mesh is wider and not so effective because the flies can crawl through the holes.

How do I know when the bat is on? I’ve pressed the on button and red light comes on but when I release the button red light goes off.

The charge goes through the wire mesh while the red buttons is pressed, releasing it turns the bat off. Type of dead man’s (or fly’s) switch. If your batteries are fully charged a fly or bug touching the mesh of while the button is depressed will produce an electric spark and you’ll know it’s on and working.

What is the output voltage of this one please?

It’s static voltage not AC current. I’m not sure exactly the amount, but it’s enough to shock and fry larger flies easily.
