If by "detect cigarette smoke specifically" you mean, does the Temtop list the specific causes of unhealthy air, no it doesn't. However, it will change the level of air polution when cigarette smoke or other polutants in the air in 2 specific readings: the level of PM2.5 polutants, listing them as healthy or unhealthy, and of AQI of Air Quality Index, listing it as good, moderate or dangerous. I find it extremely helpful.

Why did the manufacturer unnecessarily shrink the third digit in 3 of the 4 fields? Looks unattractive.

I imagine it was a better alternative than using space for a decimal point.

It's a built-in rechargeable battery. Uses USB-C to charge. Battery life is quite good.

Most of the reviews complain that the battery has a short life. Would there be any problem if I left it plugged in 24/7?

Keeping the AirTemp on 24/7 will dramatically shorten its life. However, it is very easy to turn on and off. I turn mine on for a minute or two three times a day which lengthens total battery life from as little as 4 hours to as long as more than a year.
