Q: What is the mounting material? Is it cork, or cheap styrofoam, or something else?

It is felt type material covering something. I don't know what is behind the felt. I have mounted military decorations and pins with no problems.

Q: What is the velcro strip?

Google "Velcro" and you will see. It is just a strip of velcro. when you try to display flat objects such as a challenge coin, simply cut a little pin to attach the sticky side to the coin. And then, attach the velcro to the backing to adhere to the back.

Q: About how many lapel pins would this hold?

Really depending on what pins and measurements of the pins. Viewable 17.5"H X 12.5"W. You can lay the pins in the given space and see how many you can fit
