Bluetooth stereo speakers that look, feel and sound good.
I bought these just to provide a little extra weight to the audio from an Amazon Echo Dot that we received as a gift. I'm not a big fan of individual Bluetooth speakers or wireless speaker systems that rely upon a single unit, since I've often found that - regardless of how many drivers they include in the system or what clever trickery they try to use - they just can't provide the kind of stereo separation and imaging that a proper stereo pair of speakers, spaced several feet apart, can achieve. So I was pleased to find that there are manufacturers out there who are providing Bluetooth stereo pairs that don't break the bank. The NS1s arrived very neatly packed, with their power supply, speaker cable and a 3.5mm audio cable for connecting your device of choice (if you don't want to use Bluetooth). That was a nice touch. The fit and finish looks and feels good and there is a pleasing solidity to both speakers. The right speaker is the one that connects to the power supply, while the left speaker is then connected to the right one using a standard speaker cable. The speaker connectors at each end are large and feel well made, being of a screw-down type that grips the bare speaker wire, although they will also accept banana plugs (four of which are provided if you wish to attach them to the ends of the provided speaker cable - I didn't bother and just used the bare wire connection). As well as the speaker connectors, the rear panel of the right hand speaker also has the 3.5mm audio input and a subwoofer output.Once I had them connected and powered up, pairing with the Echo Dot was very simple. The speakers were recognised immediately and the Bluetooth connection made in seconds. I then tried them out with a selection of music that I know well. Bear in mind that these speakers are very small and neat, so they're not going to provide you with thundering, room-shaking bass (the LF drivers are only around 3 or 3.5 inches). However they offer a clear, well-defined and fairly well-balanced sound (particularly considering their size) which works very well for casual listening. In a quiet environment, they can also offer more than enough volume for most reasonable purposes, although they do start to sound a little strained and the lack of bass becomes more apparent as you turn them right up. All in all though, I'd say that these little guys do a great job. They look good, sound good and work just as they should. They're not really "room fillers" that you'd want to use to provide the soundtrack to your next house party, but they're a very good option for general listening even in a fairly large room. They would also make an excellent set of desktop speakers for use with a computer, laptop, etc.Adding a subwoofer would solve the lack of bass response and Steljes have had the presence of mind to provide for this, but I'd be concerned that a lot of subs on the market might end up providing too much bass and throwing the overall sound out of balance. A decent sub would also cost you around the same as the NS1s themselves, so if you're looking for something with a bit more bass, it might make more sense to look at the slightly larger Steljes NS3s or something similar.(I originally gave these speakers a four star review, based on the slight lack of bass response. On reflection though, I knew that they would be limited in that respect owing to their size so, taking them for what they are, I'd now say that they warrant the full five stars.)
