Impressionist Applique: Exploring Value & Design to Create Artistic Quilts

Lovely patterns
I picked this specifically for the swan pattern. I’ve completed several raw edge applique quilts and so I didn’t follow the book’s appliqué process. I am very pleased with the pattern.

Not what the title implied
I wanted to love this book. I create art quilts/landscape quilts and was quite taken with the cover quilt photo. The subtitle "Exploring Value & Design to Create Artistic Quilts" implied a study of value and design, and how to interpret a picture using fabrics in an impressionist art style. Pages 7-34 (with lots of pictures, not so much text) mostly delve into "color value", interpreting color value in grey scale. This is not news to most people using color to create even traditional quilts. The last 11 of those 27 pages tells you how to sort your own stash of tone-on-tone fabrics according to the author's chart of values. The purpose of this sorting is, primarily, to be able to choose the values THE AUTHORS have chosen FOR you to make THEIR quilts. And their quilts and the patterns comprise the next 60 pages of the book. The instructions are standard applique techniques. I did learn one interesting idea about wall hanging stabilizer.I love impressionism and the quilts in the book are quite stunning. However,if I'd wanted patterns, I'd have bought patterns. I don't use other people's patterns. I had hoped to learn more about interpreting scenes/pictures of MY choosing in an artistic way. And there are artist and creative ways to use fabrics that are not simply tone-on-tone to add interest to a quilt. Well, not according to this book. One of the keys to impressionism is allowing the eye to blend colors from a distance. Obviously I know a bit about art, but I'm always looking for ways to stretch myself as a fabric artist and though this book's title showed promise, the contents did very little to enlighten me.

New ideas help with art quilting
I like to call myself an art quilter, but I should have had this book years ago! Her way of dealing with value will be "invaluable", pun intended, in my future quilts. Now I just have to go to the stash and reorganize all the tone on tones, and go buy the ones I will need for next design. Yea!

Provides great detail on techniques
The details given for assessing color palette and executing your designs was invaluable for creating a successful project that reflected the spirit and mood of a photograph translated to quilt.

This is a great addition to my art quilt library
This is a great addition to my art quilt library! Includes patterns for the swan on the cover, an eagle that I am working on now, and four more. The Periodic Table of Value in colour is a must have tool I never knew I needed. The tips to use tone on tone small prints and small print batiks for shading, reflection and shadow and using different colourways are wonderful.

OK if you want to make one of these designs
I should have taken more notice of a review which said that this book doesn't have what is suggested. The front cover is gorgeous - great selling tool! As mentioned by an earlier reviewer - the only information in this book is about how these authors make their own quilts. If you want to make one or more of the five quilts in the book - you will probably be pleased with it. However - I was hoping for some hints and tips at least - as to how to go about designing my own quilts - I don't like to just replicate other designers quilts. There is not a single sentence about how to break up your own photo into appliques. Not a single hint at all. Very disappointing. There are pages and pages of which fabrics - how to choose fabrics - value of colours - but not a hint at all for those of us who want to make our own original designs. If you are nervous of design or want to learn more about value of colours - there may be something in this book for you. Sadly - its not a great book for me.

Even experienced embroiderers or quilters would find a deal of useful information in this book. The illustrations & instructions are excellent & inspirational.

Stunning
This may not be advertised as an advanced book, but the ideas are helpful, if a little daunting. The pictures are wonderful. I can't wait to get started on my first one - just a question of finding all the fabrics I need that will work to produce something that looks as good!!!
