how big is this cot when folded up? I drive a car to the mountains, not a van or truck.

It's about 40 inches long and about 10x10inches when closed. Its not bad - it fits easily in our car with a ton of luggage. We really like it. I used it as a guest bed the other day and they really liked it to - granted it was a 13 year old boy but still... I didn't measure it so the 6x5 is entirely possible!

Does it just pop up, or do the legs lock into place?

The legs lock in place. It is very stable. We got one for each of our three kids and they just LOVE them.

i read above that it weights 6.5 lbs, but i read in someone else's report that it weights 21 lbs. which is it?

Definitely 21 lbs. If it was 6.5 lbs it's doubtful it'd be very solid anyways. Not that hard to carry but it's not light.
