The Reaper’s Garden: Death and Power in the World of Atlantic Slavery

A must read for Jamaican history
This book is on my reading list from my advisor. I haven’t finished it yet but I like it. Early colonial Jamaican history is not covered and it’s hard to find good scholarly sources on that period. I definitely recommend this book. It’s pretty well organized in the intro and you can follow along without being bogged down with lofty language historians use. I would call this more of a cultural history. You get an understanding of the people, social networks and time. The theme death is what ties the book together. This information is new to me but indeed very useful. Death is what brought them together and equaled the playing field, while it tore them apart as well! A must read.
