Do you need nunchuks to play this game or just the remote?

I have a Wii U only. I was told you can play this game on the Wii U. I have both the pro controller & the touch screen D pad but gamestop told me those don't work, so I bought a Wii remote plus today and that it should work. I tried it but it's not working for me. Do you know what I'm doing wrong here?

Do you move by pushing left/right/up/down on the + on the left of the controller, or do you move by shifting the entire remote?

I don't play on the wii but my kids do. They said you hold the controller side ways with the + on the left and use the + to go forward and backward

How many how many toads are there

I couldn't tell you how many toad's there are, I'm guessing you're talking the ones you "save" in levels but from what I heard they're fairly useless to get b/c you can get plenty of lives without spending the time to save the toads.
