GREAT VALUE - WORKS WELL - EFFICIENT RETAILER
A newer model is available but as a consequence the price of this unit was reduced by about 45%. Over the years I have purchased a variety of knife sharpeners, both manual and powered, but have never been totally happy with their effectiveness. This is the first 'sharpening steel' that I have had so cannot compare it with any other on the market but I can say that my kitchen knives are now as keen edged as I can ever remember. The technique for usage looks potentially dangerous but simple instructions and illustrations for safe sharpening were included and I have not encountered any problems. Experts also recommend the use of sharpening stones but by using a steel I have found that the knife edges are honed effectively and quickly to a condition that is more than acceptable for the home kitchen.

Good value for money
Seems to be of sturdy build quality, I’ve used it a few times now and it aligns the knife edge nicely.My only one small gripe with this design is that there is a logo engraved on the steel next to the handle which you have to remember to avoid (ie turn the steel around before running the knife along it) otherwise you will not be doing the knife edge any favours. This is also only an issue if you use the ‘hold the steel vertically while resting it on the counter and start with the knife next to the handle and run down the length of the steel’ approach to honing... otherwise I don’t see this being a problem at all.

Essential for daily knife maintenance.
This was my first honing steel so I don't have any basis for comparison.However this item (paired with correct useage) has kept my wustof 8" classic ikon chefs knife knife sharp cor 2 years.I advise using before and after each usage.Remember: a sharp knife is a safe knife.

My Knives Glide Through Paper
First time I've used a sharpening steel and decided to give it a go. I've tried various sharpening stones and pull through type ones as well. This steel feels solid and well made and a great length for my 20cm cooks knife. After watching a few videos I was good to go; 5 minutes later and I had a knife as sharp/honed as it was when first out the box. This Works well on Henckels Four Star knives as well as cheaper knives I had.I wished I had bought a sharpening steel years ago.As to the concept of sharpening, honing and stropping - I may know about that one day. Until that day I will just say my knives can now glide through sheets of paper easily. I'll probably not eat the paper I've proven my knives sharpness on but it felt good at the time.
