Good Social Commentary in a Pendergast Story!
“City of Endless Night,” Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child’s seventeenth novel featuring FBI Special Agent Aloysius Pendergast, begins with the discovery of the beheaded body of a wealthy heiress. Pendergast, initially disinterested in the case following personal struggles with Constance Greene, is drawn into the case at his FBI supervisor’s request. Working with Detective Vincent D’Agosta, Pendergast finds his interest piqued after two more people are murdered and beheaded in crimes that require expert knowledge of state-of-the-art security systems. Unable to find a link between the victims, the FBI and NYPD are caught off-guard when New York Post journalist Bryce Harriman postulates that the Decapitator is targeting the ultra-rich who have exploited the poor and give nothing back to society. Pendergast keeps his typical close council as he and D’Agosta look into New York’s high society for motive and a possible killer. Like the previous few novels, Preston and Child are back in high thriller form here as they move beyond some of the Pendergast mythos. As interesting as it is, sometimes the extensive backstory can bog down the original plot and here they have a cracker. The story captures not only the current political climate, but the role of technology and the media in shaping the narrative. That said, the subplot featuring the preacher railing against wealth was hastily-devised and added very little. Overall, the themes are strong and the interaction between Pendergast and D’Agosta makes this novel.

Pendergast Faces A Deadly Challenge
Following the dramatic events of the Obsidian Chamber, it is different Pendergast that returns for this adventure. When a series of beheadings shocks New York, Detective D'Agosta is at a loss with the conflicting clues. Pendergast is assigned to the case and seems to be off his game. The horrible murders frighten the city. We see the return of reporter Brice Harriman and learn what he has been up to. The villain is despicable and more of a challenge for Pendergast than he expected. Another fabulous book from Preston and Child. The twists and turns are intriguing and I loved the ending. The epilogue was fantastic, Pendergast needs some love in his life. This will be his most difficult challenge, how to be a good partner to Constance. I love the character development throughout the series, it shows that Pendergast is human and needs his friends. On to Versus for the Dead, continuing the march towards Cabinet of Dr. Leng! Wonderfully narrated by the late Rene Auberjonois.

Things Are Not Always As They Seem
Rather than tell you the whole story -- as some other reviewers are wont to do -- I'd just like to lay out a brief summary. Members of three different "obscenely rich" families are murdered and decapitated by an extremely detail-oriented killer who choreographs his crimes like a ballet. Every second counts, every contingent player is accounted for, and his time table must be adhered to or his strategy collapses. He is meticulous, cold-blooded, very efficient, and he takes great satisfaction in accomplishing each kill. But why these particular victims? AND WHY DOES HE TAKE THEIR HEADS? Then there are two more victims and the body count continues to grow.Preston & Child are one of the few writing teams who work together seamlessly. Think "Fred and Ginger", "Lucy and Ethel", or (for you younger readers) "Mulder and Scully". With numerous best seller and literary awards (both together and on their own) they have decided once again to pick up the mantle of A.X.L. Pendergast, Special Agent of the FBI. Going back to basics, they also team him with Lieutenant Vincent D'Agosta of the NYPD, combining different crime solving talents that are diametrically opposed. Those of you who already know and love Aloysius (and there are thousands of us) will be happy to dig into this latest thriller and be once again mesmerized by his strange combination of logic and whimsy, both effectively employed against a killer who exhibits a skill set as well-honed as the extreme talents of his brother Diogenes.I have always been impressed with the writing skills of Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child, looking forward to new efforts by both of them, but not surprised that their joint efforts have the best literary success. The intricate plot lines, the extensive and continued character development, and the well-described operating environment(s) helps immerse you in the story, forcing you to walk with the main characters as they chase down an elusive enemy. Not only do they tie in new technology and social commentary, but they always manage to throw a few new words at me, forcing me to look up the definitions in order to be sure that I get their meaning accurately. And again, the character of Aloysius is so delicious! One other point. Is this their best effort? No, that was probably "The Cabinet of Curiosities". It's hard to keep hitting home runs out of the park. But is this novel worth reading ? Will you enjoy it? So far 88% of the Amazon reviewers have given it either a 4 or 5 star rating. If you love the Pendergast series then you'll enjoy this story. There's nothing wrong with hitting a triple on occasion instead of a home run.

great story, as usual.
This book has a captivating storyline that makes it hard to put down. Some parts at the end seemed to be missing some details, making the ending feel a bit « rushed », and the killer seemed to be too easily subdued.
