Very cool book !
This was a college textbook I need for summer semester, and it’s on the heavy side but has a lot of art dating from Egyptian, Islamic, Christianity, early medieval, Byzantine, Roman, Greek, modern art to a bunch more! It’s writing is short and sweet with pictures of every art piece from painting-sculpture-metalworks-jewelry-frescos-statues-vases etc... if you need this for school or scholarly use, at the end of the book it’s has the date, publisher so fourth to work cite your sources. It’s a very good book and small but heavy. I use little post it notes to bookmark my sources.

Argument against the 1 star rating
This is a response to the one star rating. The book is phenomenal. After a lifetime of passion for art including a university and graduate (PhD) education in the social sciences and humanities I found much that was new to learn and love in this book. It challenges elitist notions of what art is or should be with its innovative chronology rather than "movement" inspired organization and I think is in itself a cutting-edge work of literary art. The pieces are heavily cross-referenced so you lose nothing by having all the art from the same movement dispersed rather than side by side. Each description is witty and brings a fresh perspective, motivating me to read even the descriptions of pieces I have read whole books about. I have read it cover to cover and given copies to friends as gifts. It is nearly worth its hefty weight in gold ($1,000 give or take a few hundred).

I loved it
Each artwork has a whole page for itself. A large coloured photo and some information on it. This book lets you sample artwork throughout the years from all over the world. I say "sample" because it doesn't go too deep into the history or meaning of each piece. Doing so would probably turn it into a mess.If you want a narrow, in depth analysis of one culture or style, this book would not be what you're looking for. If you want to know what artwork has been made for 30,000 years or you just like beautiful things to look at, then you might like this book.Plus, its pretty cheap for it's size.

Amazing journey through time, space and culture
This huge book contains a brief summary of the history of human artistic and cultural achievements. The art works are arranged in a stictly chronological order and you will be able to appreciate the way human cultures developed. While different artistic traditions started differently, with time they tend to merge and influence each other. Every work is accompanied by a succinct label stating the place of origin and the approximate time that it was made, so you will never be lost. The pictures themselves are of high quality. The descriptions are also engaging rather than prosaic. I've learned really a lot through this gigantic book.

Very Cool and Informative
Bought for a 7 year old. There were two pages that were graphic that I carefully Xacto'd out, but other than that, perfect gift; my child loves looking through the whole history of art and it sparks questions about science and history. Very cool.

Magnificent book
I thought I was familiar with art history but nearly everything shown in this book was new to me. The book has a fair amount of art from the first 25000 years. The book covers a wide variety of art types and locations. It is not simply a review of European art but includes Asian, and some African, Oceanic, and Pre-Columbian art. The book does not have references so that following up on a piece of art will involve art dictionaries, monographs and the internet. MAGNIFICENT
