THE ULTIMATE SMALL OFFICE WORKHORSE!
I recently opened an office and needed multi-function printer to handle a variety of tasks. I did hours of research and narrowed it down to the Epson and Brother brands as they consistently ranked the highest among customer satisfaction. I decided on the Brother MFCJ5720DW because of its efficient ink usage and INCREDIBLY high yields per cartridge. I also felt that is ink was reasonable priced when compared to other models with less yield. I placed my order on 03/31/2015 but waited a few weeks to write a review in order to break in the machine. (My experience is limited to Mac products)**THE PROS**This machine prints UNBELIEVABLY fast. It spits out pages one after the other without sacrificing quality. It completes my jobs (large and small) before I even get a change to walk to the printer. The printer only slows down when one uses the "both sides" option because it has to print on both sides of the same sheet. It has incredible paper storage as it can house up to 500 sheets (typically two packages) of paper in two separate trays. Additionally, each tray can be set to handle various dimensions of printing. I have only experienced one jam while attempting to scan a large-sized paper and I am too blame as I failed to properly seat the paper in the printer's slot. The jam was fairly simple to clear as the spools can be access through multiple points. This machine also comes equipped with "duplex scanning" which scans both sheets of a paper on a single pass. You can simply set any documents on printer and let it work its magic without having to assist it through the process. You can also print from almost any device using the wireless printing function. I am still amazed every time I print documents directly from my iPhone.Brother's customer service is TOP NOTCH! I had a problem with the wireless scanning feature. I called Brother and was on the phone with a KNOWLEDGEABLE representative in less than 5 minutes. The rep emailed me an updated driver, walked me step by step through the installation process (both on the machine and my computer), and stood by on the phone until I was able to successfully scan to my computer.**CONS**This machine is BIG and HEAVY. It is definitely going to occupy a fair amount of real estate (I decided to place mine on its own table). Its LCD display is relatively small and, because of the size, some may have trouble reading the display.

Didn't last as long as other Brother printers!
UPDATEFrom the beginning I could never get it to feed anything from the second tray. It was about 3 years after I bought it that I found out where the red ink circling of things not to be or to be scanned feature was. It would disappear off my wired home network periodically but strangely enough sometimes one pc would see it and the other wouldn't, and vice versa. Then in 2020 when I turned it off and unplugged it because I was moving it from one socket to another it wouldn't turn on, I tried several more sockets, nothing. Took it to a PC repair shop and they said it turned on for them initially but then it gave trouble so they thought the board was bad. I hate junking stuff, so I took it to another shop and they said the board could be going bad, but if you plug it in it comes on automatically, just don't plug it out.It worked for a few months then kept saying it had a paper jam even though none was obvious. I searched online and tried everything, including cleaning the transparent band. It won't even allow me to put in photo paper to remove paper fragments, it keeps saying printer error. My previous Brother printers were laser and lasted for years, one died after about 12 years of heavy use, and I sold the other because I wanted a color printer that could do duplex printing.I also bought a Brother MFC-5800 laser printer and it's also been a disappointment as well. The latest generation of Brother printers seem to be the pits.Original ReviewI haven't used it that much, but the starter cartridges were excellent - the black printed about 500 pages. However, printing photos leaves a lot to be desired. I printed a random collection of images on plain paper using vivid settings and it left a lot to be desired. Images were sort of grayed for want of a better description. I suspect this will probably be best for printing things like graphs or text edits in documents, not photos. I like that I can scan on both sides and also print on both sides.I haven't tried the bypass trays, but from my experience with Brother laser printers it's best not to do so. I print labels and then put them on envelopes, I don't print on envelopes directly. The printer is huge, so make sure you have plenty of space to put it. I have it on a small computer desk (one that's about the size of a student desk in width) and it takes up most of the width (with the tray extended for letter size) and length of it, it also almost touches the top shelf as well with the adf tray out. I use this computer desk as my printer desk so the laser is at the bottom, and an old HP color printer is on the top, and this printer is on the desktop.UPDATENot sure if it's Windows 10 updates that caused the problems, but I had to reinstall the printer and for some reason while I can print from my pc to the printer I can't scan from the printer to my pc or scan from my pc - I used to be able to do this with the earlier versions of 10. Now when I try it, I get a message that it doesn't see any pc on the network! On another Windows 10 pc, it won't scan to e-mail, it keeps saying there is no default e-mail set, which isn't so. So I end up scanning to Dropbox, at least this works and then accessing the scan that way. I also tried scanning and sending an e-mail directly from the printer and that seems to work since the person received the scanned docs.By accident I found out where you can find the app which allows you to circle text in red and either scan and omit the red circled text or copy only the red circled text - it's under Apps - keep scrolling to the right until you see it then once selected it's about 4 pages in, there are also options to scan to Word etc. I tried circling the two areas of text with a pen but at first it wasn't recognized so I had to go over the areas with the pen again (I think a medium tip red Sharpie marker might be better). However, only the first red circled area was copied and not completely either.I tried to put legal paper in the bottom tray but it will not pick up the paper at all! I had to use the manual feed tray to get it to feed legal paper. I still can't get it to scan directly to any pc on my network, even though the printer is on the same sub net as the pcs using it. I have to either e-mail it to myself or scan to cloud storage. I guess it and Windows 10 don't get along for direct connection to pcs.I'm still not sure how much prints you get per cartridge, but the frequency of purchasing has declined - my Dad uses this printer the most because it's located where he doesn't have to bend to collect the paper and he's of the old school who likes hard copies of most things and deletes the digital copies!

Prints for months and months on a single batch of toner
Compared to my previous, toner-wasting HP Envy, this printer has been lovely...at least as far as the savings I've realized by rarely needing to buy ink. Plus, the toner comes in individual little cartridges, one for red, one for black, one for yellow, etc. so if you happen to burn through a lot of cyan, as I always seem to do for no reason I can identify...you don't have to pay to replace all the colors...when only one is low. I have to say that the print quality is marginal, but honestly, it's a fair trade. In the year I've had this printer, I've only replaced ink once. By contrast, the HP Envy was going though about $90 batches of toner every month...and sometimes reported the ink as empty even immediately after replacement. So, I'm pretty happy with Brother's budget-minded all-in-one. The weak point for this printer is that it needs to be rebooted about every third time I use it, and the power button on the front is all but useless. It has to be physically unplugged to get things to reset, and that's an awkward activity for me...since I keep it on a shelf in an armoire in my home office. Otherwise this printer is fantastic...connects easily to my network and all my Mac and iOS devices print wirelessly in a snap.

This is a rubbish machine. Customer service is rubbish as well as they won't help you unless you buy very expensive cartridges for the machine first even though the machine is only a few weeks old and any issue has nothing to do with printing. The sensor in the machine is very poor. I now have two brand new machines that don't work both due to sensor problems. Avoid buying Brother products.

Very good, though the sheet feeder would work better with a slight incline - sometimes it refuses to print because it "has no paper" - so you tell it to carry on and then it works. This problem seems to go away if you tilt the machine.
