"Whimsically drawn pictures" of Hokusai
This is for the 2018 Thames & Hudson 3 volume set (the original1814 set had 15 volumes.) There is a preface & table of contents for each of the three volumes that has been translated to english as well as several essays in english at the back of each of the three. The forwards to the original volumes are included in Japanese with english translations as well, but the Japanese notations on the individual pages are not translated. This is not "Manga" as in the modern sense of the word, rather, these started as a drawing manual for the apprentices of Katsushika Hokusai. Each volume is grouped into different themes, masterful crazy amazing 300 pages each--drawings of "Edo Life," "The Wonders of Nature," and "Flights of Fancy." Hokusai's figures have always been a delight to view, having three volumes of them at your fingertips is a pretty cool. Small in size, 4" x 6" - the images are reduced, but totally crammed with drawing references, its a great value.

Must Have in Your Hokusai Library
The “Magna” set is on a small size, but reproduction is of high quality. As far as I know, there is no other readily available reprints of this Hokusai’s masterpiece. Also important, the accompanying text is written beautifully and is very informative!

Great for a gift ✨
I bought these for my husband and he loved them. He’s in the process to have a collection of Japanese art books, so these were great. I loved them too!

the picture inside are great, but
As the title says. the pictures inside are great, but there's an issue. The pictures are cropped in weird. Like they feel either congested or isolated in some spots. Otherwise, a nice study of forms and objects. Recommended.

Good Copies
Beautiful copies of Hokusai's manga. Was able to see his originals in the East Asian Art Museum in DC. The books are smaller than I hoped, but the content is all there.

Terrific set
A TERRIFIC set, however, this set is post-card sized, which I knew, but wanted to share.

Cute little volumes.
I downloaded the e-books from the Smithsonian website, the colors in these volumes are different than the scanned books from the museum. The lines in the drawings are subtle and overall they look better in the ebooks but I kept this set anyway because I like real books.
