This is a great series and was recommended to me for my 4th grade son. The illustrations are fantastic and the stories may be timeless, but this is not a 4th grade reading level. My son would have loved this in 2nd grade. He may still love this now, but it is well below his age range at this point. I would put this at a 6-7 year old level. There is only a paragraph or so of words on each alternating page, the rest being illustrations. I have 2 three year olds, so we will still get plenty of use from these books, but I missed my window on my oldest boy and didn’t want someone else to not know.

My 7yo son is enjoying the first book. He’s super excited to finish it today! These are adventurous, fun, and clean. Proves you don’t need crude humor to keep a boys attention.I leveled this as an easy read for his age, not because it’s easy for him, but because a public schooled child would find them easy because they have most of the words memorized by his age.

My 8 year old son had yet to be really interested in any book that he was given to read independently. This series changed that- they are interesting storylines that have enough repeating words, yet not too basic or dumbed down. The illustrations are beautiful. These stories have really helped his fluency and his desire to read. This was the first time I’ve ever seen him read more than what was assigned.

I loved these books as a kid, and now my kids get to enjoy them too!

Bought this for my grandson for Christmas. Has always been a favorite in my library. Nothing compares to the art and compelling stories of Billy and his beloved horses. We love these books!!

These were some of my very favorite books when I was little. I just purchased for my 11 and seven-year-old. We read three of them tonight and kids loved them. The illustrations are all black and white but absolutely beautiful. Just as good as I remember.

I ordered this series for my grandson. He is a new reader and excited to be able to read chapter books. This series is perfect for little boys! Billy gets a horse and they become best friends. Billy and Blaze find themselves on many adventures!!!
