Theories for Direct Social Work Practice

As far as theory is concerned, this book really has it all. I'd rank this up there with the DSM-V as far as how essential this book is for social workers. It contains the most prominent theory one will need if they expect to do case management or primary therapy. Informative yet concise, this is probably my most valued textbook.

This book gives a short and to-the-point description, application, and evaluation of several different theories for social work practice. I'm using it as the textbook for my Theories class in an MSW program, but I predict that I'll want to buy the book (as expensive as it is!) after the semester is over. It won't tell you how to develop good therapeutic skills, but you'll certainly better understand the theories behind different methods of practicing social work. It's easy to read and helps get information across quickly but thoroughly.

This is an absolute need when learning about theories of therapy. I recommend this book to everyone. It is a must buy, and I refer to it daily when working with clients in therapy. I like the layout of the book as well, and it is easy to understand.

Yes, it is a easy read and I also have to read this textbook for my MSW classes. I made the mistake of renting and realized this is a keeper book which I will have to put out extra money. That was my mistake don’t make the same.

Bought this for a course in my MSW program. I enjoyed the class and we really used the book from front to back. This book has a lot of usuful information if you are looking to start running groups or working with clients in your practicum. I plan on keeping this text and not selling it back because of all the information that you can gain from this book. Im glad that I took the course because of this book!.

this was required reading for my MSW theory class, and I know it's one I'll be hanging on to for a while. Easy to read, and I especially loved the summaries at the end of each chapter. They're still very informative, and came in handy a few times when I didn't have time to do the full required reading for class!

First, the book is a regular paperback book size (not textbook) which seems outrageous for a $107-$114 book. The text also smudges very easily when you highlight throughout. You'll want to be very careful and light-handed when doing so. I found that very frustrating as it's a book I needed to mark for my MSW class. The print quality should be a lot better considering the price. Beyond the annoyance of the print quality, the book itself is fairly easy to read and navigate. I appreciate the style and tone as it doesn't feel as dry.
