Rudolf Laban: An Extraordinary Life

I learned so many new things about the start of European Modern Dance and just how instrumental Rudolf Laban was to this and the zeitgeist of the times in art making. A revolutionary man, and worthwhile for anyone interested in the history of Dance.

The importance of Laban and the other German expressionists to theatre dancing should be evident today. Ballet is not resricted to formula, music theatre is expressive and varied. But Laban made much more of an impact on dance education and analysis, which needs to be promoted even more now than it has over the last 20 years. This book gives and interesting insight as to how Laban and others tried to establish a new art form in the crazy 20th century years. I feel that the book could have been improved if more than the author had contributed, but never-the-less, a book I wish I had read when I was a dance student in the 70s
