A cheap and convenient cure for "Brown Thumbs", and may prevent dirty fingernails as well!
These are super handy devices. I have groups of potted plants in several rooms of my home. This device is so affordable that I got one for each of the rooms so that I can leave it with the plants to check them easily. It is especially handy for plant containers that do not have drainage holes. While pots with drainage holes are best, as they allow excess water to drain away, I have some pots that do not because they are near electrical devices where I didn't want any possibility of a saucer beneath the pot overflowing or getting split. Having one of these handy devices nearby, allows me to easily check the moister level of the soil 12 inch deep. Trying to feel the soil with your finger can often lead to overwatering plants, because the top inch of soil might be dry, while the lower levels are too wet.Similar devices with two prongs that you stick into the soil will usually have a setting to measure soil acidity as well as moisture. I have one of them that I use periodically to test the soil of plants just as blue berries that require very acid soil. For more frequent checking of soil moisture, I much prefer having these with a single prong to stick into the soil. Besides having lots of indoor plants, I have some outside plants in my yard that require watering during dry summer periods. When these outside plants have dense masses of roots or when the soil is hard, the double pronged instruments can be much more difficult to insert without bending the probes or breaking the device. These with the single probe are much more durable when doing regular checks of soil moisture.Their low price makes it easy to have both available for the appropriate tasks.

Nice for the price
None of these meters seemed to get an unqualified unanimous genuine Hurrah, so I went with cheap. I must say that for a quite inexpensive slightly dopey-looking (hey, some of us like dopey) item, this is not bad at all. I tried it on several differently-watered plants and it was fairly accurate (so far -- who knows in six months?); it's also easy to read. A few cautions: It works best in soil or a medium that closely surrounds the tip, so if you have something in lava or moss, like bonsai or orchids, it could be less than accurate. Do wipe the tip after each use. Don't take a reading immediately and run; give the needle a few seconds to settle on a number.

Adorable and accurate water meter
Perfect little meter for my kids to help me care for the plants. One, it was a great price. Two, it is funny looking, which always appeals to a 3 year old.I bought this meter as my indoor plant meter. I have two kids, and they would fight over who can measure the moisture in the soil. Having a second meter helps. I find it measures just as well as a more expensive meter too. Now, the kids checked each plant inside and out, and they call out the colors and number. They then water plants that need a drink. I can’t say much more except how perfect this meter is for little gardeners.

A must have for amateur indoor gardeners!
This is a must-have tool for the occasional gardener. It accurately reads moisture at the bottom of pots letting you know if additional water is necessary or not. It requires a simple act of inserting the probe into the soil and getting an instant read. It couldn’t be simpler. And it doesn’t cost an arm and a leg!!I discovered the other day that, while staying home more due to the pandemic, I’ve been seriously overwatering a spider plant I have had for over 10 years. Having to try to remove the foul-smelling soil from a root-bound pot on a small carpeted balcony was not a pleasant experience. It was a mess! This handy little meter is a life saver.I recommend it.

Pleasantly surprised
Santa, put this in my husband’s stocking, almost as a joke… But it turns out it’s great! A real surprise favorite gift this Christmas! Does exactly what it should, and it’s cute!

NOT RELIABLE !!! UPDATE: OR.. IS POT SIZE an issue ????
It worked for a short time ! Reading then became all the same, in the red (dry). So I put it in a glass of water and it still showed in the red (dry) . I mean really... no wonder plants were suffering, ... didn't last, what a piece of junk. By the way ; it has not been dropped, handled rough, nor kept in any plant's soil. Also, I do not have children that could have played with it. Review rate 1 star.UPDATE : I had written the above and here is an update of perhaps why... Review rate now 3 stars.I may have been wrong. I had given this product a BAD review earlier today, but I thought I would try again. Just for chuckles, I thought I would tested it in 1/3 cup of water & it showed a reading of "red (dry "). Later after previous review I tried again showing my hubby only this time used a TALL glass of water. SURPRISE !!! .. ..it registered "green (moist)". It seems one has to able to use a good length of the probe in checking soil. IF SO.. what if some of your pots are small, not much height for probe to register, right ?. And that's where it didn't register correctly for me ... on the small shallower pots. I guess it may be an issue, OR, it's a fickle bug water meter (?).
