Disappointing
This is the fourth and the least-good of Sweeney's AR-15 volumes. While it does contain some useful information, it is not as well-written and insightful as his other books. He seems to have run out of things to say about the AR-15.There is a LOT of material on the now-popular .300-cal subsonic offerings (.300 Whisper, .300 AAC Blackout, etc). If you are interested in these cartridges, this book will make an entertaining read. There is some good new information about magazines, and also a very interesting section on the rifle's gas rings. There is a whole host of abusive testing, designed to prove. . . well I can't figure out what Sweeney was going for. He spent a lot of time and money torturing rifles, but I'm not sure what he accomplished. He broke things and ruined perfectly good guns, and he did show how reliable and durable an AR can be, but I don't know that this was really useful information, or deserved so much space in the book. There was also a chapter regarding how quickly rifles heat up and cool off in firing. I couldn't make heads or tails of most of the data in the charts, and in any event I'm not sure what the data is useful for. Again, a big waste of time and ammunition, not to mention ink and paper.I have generally enjoyed Sweeney's writing, but I think he is out of ideas.

Sweeney does it again..
Patrick Sweeney is an 'all-things AR' extrordinaire. Nothing gets by Sweeney. If you have a question on the AR system or platform, at least one of his 4 volumes is sure to provide the answer. Everything from cleaning, ammo, function testing or manufacturer's specifics..he has it covered. Almost all the varied (and there are many) manufacturers are represented in the different volumes and this last isn't that much different except this volume (Vol.4), Patrick takes on numerous AR's and abuses them to no end. Tests that even HE had trouble completing except for the sheer fact of disputing the myth(s) that the AR platform is not the reliable, tough weapon system that has served...and will for some time, our country in armed conflicts around the world. He literally stomps that notion in the dirt. Sweeney also covers the many accessories available for the competitor, the sportsman and the most revered combat veteran. And he does all this with a GREAT sense of humor.

but the book could have been 20% fewer pages if these pictures and any mention of "my shooting crew enjoyed running me out of am
Some decent information, but WAY too much space devoted to product reviews of rifles and products that become dated VERY quickly. Book is old enough now (over a decade) that many of the companies reviewed or mentioned are not even in business any longer. Mr. Sweeney also has an "interesting" process for selecting pictures to go with his articles within the book (and his others, I went ahead and bought 'em all). Many of the features he describes as being exemplary are, frustratingly, not pictures, but multiple angles of him shooting the rifle are invariably included. A certain license for vanity can be excused, but the book could have been 20% fewer pages if these pictures and any mention of "my shooting crew enjoyed running me out of ammo with this rifle" were deleted.

Too much of a good thing
As always Patrick Sweeney's books are interesting and well written with a touch of humor. For such a simple gun I think the topic is running dry with four volumes and gunsmithing the AR-15 he's covered pretty much everything that can be covered. I noticed throughout this book that much of the material I had already read in various magazine articles over the last year, especially pages 121-197. It's a good book but if you don't already have the rest you're better off buying volume 2 or Gunsmithing the AR-15. I give it a 3.5

I would recommend this to a friend
This book is a must have for AR owners. The book goes through the various configurations of the gun, as well as a few specific models. When I bought this book, I didn't own an AR yet so when I bought the gun, I knew how it operated and what each part did.The only thing that I didn't care for we're the models the author decided to include. It would have been nice to have all of the most highly sold AR's. Other than that there are definitely enough subjects to allow one to alter or modify an AR, or just to learn more.

NOT a general knowledge book about the AR-15
Being a new AR-15 owner, I was looking for a book to introduce me to AR-15 ownership. For example, care and maintenance, safety, features, etc.... That is NOT this book. While the book is informative, interesting and obviously written by a clear expert on the firearm, it is not what it is represented to be in the description.

Missing Photos
Location 1342 in Kindle version has the wrong photo, in the original text, the photo correct photo is on pages 108-109. The missing photo is similar to the photo on page 1288, except the missing photo has the "knife blade" pointing to the leade ends. The remaining photos in the Kindle version are correct.
