I am new to this author but now have downloaded several of his books. Have read two so far and they were both enjoyable. The character development is more than you get in books of this type and that is refreshing since it is more like a novel rather than an action-adventure series. The research that went into the Native-American culture and language is also both impressive and enlightening. His knowledge of the geography is also enjoyable, fortunately it is not as overdone as one of those older Mitchner works and has the right amount to inform and not try to get you into geology. The lead character has human flaws and an admirable honesty. As stories go, Krueger seems to be a fine writer but as most readers know it is the people, their interactions and motivations that make it personal enough to care about them. Good vs. Evil is not a new theme but presented in an interesting way with people who seem real even though you may never have met their type before does not take away from wanting to know them better and hurt when a good person dies at the hands of an evil-doing.As a boy I read Jack London stories, as an adult I discovered Thomas Perry with his wonderful character Jane Whitefield. Now I am pleased to add W. Kent Krueger with his hero Cork O'Connor to my list of authors whose works enrich my reading experiences.

Highest praise for suspense, characters, and just plain beautiful writing. Astoundingly good.
This is the second book in a long series that I can already tell is going to be a reader love affair for me. Reading it was one of those "stop presses" moments for me, the kind that you get when you know you're on the verge of discovering a new-to-you writer that is going to sweep you away to all the places readers love most. It's not just the characters, it's the setting in and around the boundary waters between Minnesota and Canada, the Indian reservation backdrop, the complex theme of modern versus traditional beliefs, man versus nature (which can be trite, but is NEVER trite here), and the backstory for a main character and his family that blew up in book one and is slowly starting to come together in book two. This book is a steady march into suspense that absolutely took my breath away. This is masterful writing and storytelling at its finest and I'd recommend it to anyone wanting an amazingly good read. The series is best read in order but as a standalone the suspense in this one cannot be beat. Astoundingly good.

An excellent read
The setting is Tamarack County located north of St. Paul and due east of Fargo. The cast of characters gets pretty big when FBI agents, Native Americans and other characters join a wilderness search party. They are looking for a young woman who goes by the single name of Shiloh, a country western star who also owns her own record company. To top off the crowded scene, three men arrive and each one claims to be Shiloh’s father. Former county Sheriff “Cork” O’Connor joins the group of searchers and they embark on an exciting and sometimes deadly expedition into the U.S./Canada border region where many lakes, rivers, streams, islands and forests abound. To make matters worse, the first winter snow is about to cover the landscape. This novel bears a resemblance to Craing Johnson’s books about Wyoming Sheriff Walt Longmire. In both cases, you have a sheriff tracking down a criminal or trying to save someone in the wildnerness, Native Americans providing assistance, and severe weather hindering the successful accomplishment of the mission. Cork is separated from his wife, Jo, an attorney who provides pro bono legal assistance to local Native Americans. Longmire is a widower and his daughter Cady is an attorney who does similar work for no fee. Nevertheless, William Kreuger has his own engaging style and tells an interesting, complicated, and satisfying story while springing several surprises along the way.

Fabulous
Great story. Well written. Living in MN I really enjoy reading about the Boundary Waters and Ojibwe. I’m on to the next in the series.

Cute Mystery - Appalling Research
The plot isn't bad: Girl goes out to find herself, is chased by shady lawmen, the bad guys, the good guy, and the person that really cares about her. For a mystery plot it isn't bad. That said, the author is severely lacking in his research which is why I don't know if I can finish this.I grew up just outside the Boundary Waters (not to mention vacationing there) and worked in Aurora. Being from the area I was really excited about this book. I understand that there is some fictional liberty in describing towns and I can allow for it. I'll buy that the casino is somewhere near Aurora (it's half an hour away, and they changed the name of the lake around the town). However, this author has absolutely No Concept of where Anything is on the Iron Range or in the Boundary Waters! A lake that features prominently in his story, Embarrass Lake (Never called Bare Ass lake by locals) is 44 miles from the nearest entry point of the Boundary Waters. The other lakes and rivers he mentions are diversions from the name or non-exixtant as well. I did some checking into the history and the BWCA never extended down towards Aurora. The Ojibwe in the area are also Never referred to as Anishinaabe because that speaks of several tribes extending across the midwest.Reading a book that features so prominently in an area where I grew up that is so extremely inaccurate makes it hard for me to enjoy the story line. And by the way, anyone who has camped knows you don't stake down the tent before you put the poles in.

Awesome read!
The first book in this series, Iron Lake, was gifted to me. After reading it I quickly added Boundary Waters and Purgatory Ridge to my Christmas wish list. This was my first time reading books from this author, William Kent Krueger, won't be the last! Story moves along quite nicely, I love a well written series as I "know" the characters going into the second one so can pay more attention to the story. Highly recommend this author!

What a brilliant read. The characters come to life and I leant so much about the culture of the NorthAmerican tribes. The stories told reflected life. I was sad to finish the book. His descriptions of the place brought it to life.

Enjoyable
There is a lot to like about William Kent Krueger's book Boundary Waters. The pages pass by quickly, the characters are relatable and there is a mystery going on that is interesting.Cork O'Connor is approached by a man who wishes to have his daughter found, she is somewhere in the Quetico-Superior Wilderness and if anyone can find her it is Cork.To make matters murky the missing woman is a famous recording artist and the press are interested in her whereabouts as well as some mysterious parties who turn up in town with an interest in her well-being.The author writes well and the story is a good one, it might get occasionally a little fantastical but that is ok, it is fiction after all.

Rasend spannend
