Early Mesopotamia: Society and Economy at the Dawn of History

Very well written. Truly expert . Easy to follow for the lay reader.

This is the main book everyone needs to have if they are going to be a Near eastern archaeologist. It covers nearly all aspects of Mesopotamia and even has further reading recommendations after chapters. Fantastic book!

This book would get five stars, but the information is difficult to digest due to the author's writing style. It seems as if he cuts his thoughts midway, with extensive insertions, making it difficult for the reader to follow, having to skip over the divergents, in order to complete the thought before coming back to them to finish it. The writing is also very dense. I've read quite a few books on Mesopotamia such as the works of William Hallo, and found those easier to read due to a clear flow of thought. This book however, doesn't have that, but is information stacked upon information. Learning is more than the mere transference of much information, but clear thinking in how we should digest that info. I would love to give this book 5 stars because the content is awesome, but the writing style is just too choppy. Other than that, the information is excellent and the transparency noble; where there is lack of information on a subject, the author is not reluctant to say so.

Nicholas Postgate makes reading ancient history as interesting as reading a well written novel. Yet, he is thorough and detailed. This is an excellent book.

Reading several books on Mesopotamia, I like this one the best! IT is useful for a class but also engaging and interesting. Now, I might not choose this as a pleasure read, but worth the work for the learning.
