The Usborne Flip Flap Body Book (Flip Flaps)

I knew it was only a matter of time before my 4 year old would start asking questions about how babies are made and where they come from & thankfully the boo arrived just in time! This book is great for getting the conversation started on a high level before children get to an age where they feel too awkward to ask questions. It covers everything (on a high level) from digestion, and your 5 senses to how babies are conceived and develop. They don’t say that a man & women have to have sex but they do show an egg and sperm and explain that one comes from the woman and the other from the male. Up to you to you explain or not explain how those two came together. For now my daughter is satisfied with the answer in the book and hasn’t yet pressed into the “how”. When that question does arise it will be great having already covered a lot of it through here. My 4.5 year old daughter loves this book and loves asking all sorts of questions and is looking it up in this book together. Great find! Worth its weight in gold :)

Covers the digestive system, senses (nervous system), and an intro to how babies are made and grow inside a woman. (Deals with sperm and egg and wombs and that babies come out between a mom's legs, but does not get into the mechacnics of sex, or for that matter mention that penises and vaginas exist. This will probably invite questions from curious kids, but I've already explained it to my curious George anyway, so it didn't matter for me. If you are the super skittish type, you should get this book, because the younger you plant the idea in your kids that reproduction is normal and human, the easier it is to talk about it more in depth and on moral levels in the future. It kept my four year old boy's attention for the whole book. If you are a super literal science geek, you may not like that germs are pictured as fuzzy creatures with six arms and that the digestive system is repeatedly referred to as the "food tube," and the drawings show spigots in the stomach and intestines squirting digestive juices around. But, it does a good job communicating the idea of the different processes in simple language a child can understand. It would also be good for older children to read to themselves, because it is written at a simple reading level with lots of illustrations, labels, and little comic type drawings with dialogue. That fact makes it a little more challenging to read outloud, because you have to do a lot of pointing to show what you are reading. Overall, it lives up to its description.

We purchased this book as part of our homeschool curriculum for our 5 and 3 year old boys. The 5 year old, in particular, is fascinated by this book and loves reading it with us. It is really helping him understand the basics of how his body works. It has a whole section (about 1/3 of the book) about how babies are made, but the information is very appropriate for young children and talks mostly about how the babies grow while in the mom's tummy. There is no mention of "how" the sperm from the man gets to where it could meet with the egg from the woman, which I think would have been more information than I would have been comfortable discussing at this point. Anyway, a great overview of the body and how it functions.

My 2.5 yr old found this book really interesting and the concepts easy to understand as a first Science book. I'm sure we'll get plenty pf use in the years to come as he grows up and starts to ask more questions. I didn't go into part 3 in detail but he was happy to read about digestion in part 1.

I thought the wording and pics were good for my 3 yr old but it goes into sperm and eggs. That as the only section that was just too deep and he probably couldn't follow. Of course I will give him that information but only when he's ready/asking for it. Haven't decided whether to take it out yet because he also doesn't let me skip pages.

Full of great information. My kids love to look through it. I have to change the wording for some of the names of things, as my kids are still pretty little (2 and 4), and I kind of chuckle at the way they describe things, but it seems to be done tactfully and we will be able to enjoy this book for awhile.

Being in such a diverse and multicultural city such as Kansas City, this book was a great read and navigated hard to explain areas easily for my 4 year old especially explaining how babies are made.

My children ages 2 and 3 absolutely love this book! The pages are rather busy, but full of really good information and written in a such a way that even the youngest children can understand. My only warning would be to parents that don't want to expose their young children to "the birds and the bees" yet. There is a section specifically for how babies are made. It is very gently written and presented really well so I had no problem reading it too my children. We have spent several hours reading and talking about this book, my 3 y/o loves to tell us how her body works! We have all learned a lot from this book, highly recommend.

I brought this book for my 6 year old son as he has started to ask a few questions, is wanting to know about the body and its parts. This book is excellent, perfect for his age, explains things appropriate to this age range, has great explanations, nice bright pictures with lift the flap pages which make it more interesting and fun to read. I even read it before I gave it him and found out things I didn't know! Great read and great price! Definitely recommended!

I live quite a way from my daughter and grandson and a 7 year old asking where babies come from..... for once I am thankful I live far away oops x child friendly but when he read it, he still said 'it did not say how it happened' x So... a good book but needed an innocent explanation without spoiling a child's innocence xx

My 3yo loves the stories about food and babies (not so much into senses yet, too small I guess). The book is nice (despite some outdated info in it - like the taste buds distribution on the tongue) and pictures are pleasant. I got the used version, it was in very good condition and costed nothing.

Good book for explaining all about how the human body works. From babies to food it's all exp,aimed in an easy to understand way. I'd say it's aimed at ages 5-8 but that all depends on your child's personal maturity....some children handle information better than others.

Superb. My two love this especially the bits about where babies come from. It does mention whence the baby emerges but doesn't say how the sperm is delivered to the egg
