Description

Review "I have conducted the world's greatest orchestras for almost sixty years and can say that oboist Joseph Robinson is one of the finest musicians I ever met. His natural musicality always inspired me, whether he was interpreting a Mozart Concerto, a Strauss tone poem, or one of the Brahms symphonies." Zubin Mehta"You have led a storied life and I am glad you are telling it now in print." Bill Moyers"Your book is fantastic--direct, passionate, and a real page-turner!" Eugene Izotov Principal Oboe, San Francisco Symphony"Joe Robinson has penned an extraordinary memoir that will be fascinating to musicians and the rest of the public as well. It reads like a novel--gripping and colorful. Not a word is wasted; his style is clever, spare, eloquent, and often humorous . . . Robinson has made his story of an audacious, upstart oboist an adventure for all--inspiring and uplifting. A Hero's Life!" Your book would make a good movie!" Elaine Douvas, Principal Oboe, Metropolitan Opera, Head of Woodwinds at Juilliard"The writing is excellent . . . this memoir is terrific!" Ervin Duggan, former FCC Commissioner and President of PBS"Joe Robinson's memoir is a celebration of tenacity in pursuit of artistic excellence by a musician entranced with the love of language. He has the captivating ability to describe the exhilaration of 'a few good notes' to untutored laymen. His is a fable for all who dream large, then succeed by rigorous training, determined resilience, and a refusal to compromise with excellence." Hon. Wyche Fowler, former U.S. Senator from Georgia and Ambassador to Saudi Arabia

Great Memoir of a Great Musician and Devoted Educator

Although quite familiar with the author’s musical artistry, I was in no way prepared for his rich and exquisite writing! I read this staggering memoir in 3 sittings with heightened annoyance each time the telephone rang or the dog nudged me. Joe Robinson’s extraordinary recounting of his non-conventional 36 years leading to the Principal Oboe chair in the New York Philharmonic will be fascinating to every oboe player, woodwind player, musician, and lover of life!Starting with his early years as a boy in the Jim Crow South of Appalachia, Robinson shares the tales of his diverse international adventures with humility, humanity and humor. While it is clear that he is a true champion of education, sharing his professional and life experiences for the benefit of others, the book is also a deeply personal account of his struggles, loves, and aspirations.Bravo Oboe Joe!

Having been familiar with some of writer's history, this was a very rewarding memoir. I have recommended it to others.
