Musical interest maintenance
I gave my grandson a small ukulele when he was two years old, satisfying his interest for a "music guitar." I tuned it to a D major chord so that when he strummed he produced a tolerable sound. (Even if he is gifted, he was not likely to learn chords at that age!) Now that he's 3.5 years old the uke was too small and he asked for a larger "guitar" -- with a strap. After considerable investigation, this Schoenhut guitar seemed the best match for his age, size, coordination, interest. I have tuned it to an E major chord and he is proud to be on stage with his "real guitar." He's only had it for a month, but thus far it seems to be a good match. The intonation doesn't last, but that's to be expected with an inexpensive instrument. My goal for him is to retain his enthusiasm for music with an instrument that to him is credible, relative to his age.

Strummin'
We bought the Red/Black guitar in 2011. Five years later, it is still making music. This is a quality purchase and a great way to introduce your child to the guitar. The size is impressive enough without being intimidating. It’s about 1/3 smaller than a regular-sized instrument, but that makes it a perfect fit for the smaller torso and shorter arm length of the 8-12 year old group. The body of the guitar is well made with a moderate resonance, and the steel strings (picks are provided) help to project the sound. It’s a complete package with extra strings, picks and even a soft, padded case. The pegs required constant adjustment, and if your child isn’t schooled in that art, they may get discouraged. The Shoenhut guitar is a stunning piece, and a quality purchase.

Can't get it to tune properly.
I was really disappointed with this guitar. I've been playing guitar for 15 years and bought this for my 6 year old son for Christmas. Out of the box it looks beautiful and durable. I tried tuning it before giving it to my son so that I could show him some starter chords when he opened it, but no matter how hard I tried, I could not get these strings to hold a note. As soon as we would pluck the strings it would go out of tune. I then replaced all the strings, but the same problem remains. I'd like to return the product, but a few months have passed now.One thing I noticed is that there is a fret all the way at the top of the guitar, directly under the nut. I've never seen this before. Usually you have the nut, then a space, then the first fret. This guitar has the nut, then a very small space, and then a fret, which I believe is causing all the problems, but I can't be sure.I wish I would have spent a little bit more money and found a more reliable guitar, at least one I can tune. You won't be able to teach your child, or have them teach themselves, how to play guitar with this model.

Bought for 1 year old nephew
I looked all over for a guitar for my 1 year old nephew. I didn't want one of those baby guitars that lights up and plays a random note or song when you push the buttons. His dad is an excellent guitarist, so I wanted something real, but not too expensive incase he eventually broke it. I finally settled on this guitar, and I'm thrilled! My nephew LOVES it! He sits on the floor and strums it. It sounds great since it has real strings, not like the little kid ones that have plastic strings. Even better, his dad also has a new toy! My nephew sometimes has to fight his dad to play it. When dad is playing his own guitar, they can sit and play together now. I'm sure it won't be long until they are playing and singing duets. Great bonding time!

Good looking, better than other children's guitars
I purchased this so that my 3 year old wouldn't destroy my good guitar. For this purpose, it has worked out perfectly. It doesnt hold a tune very well, but perhaps this could be fixed with new strings. Don't get me wrong, it sounds better than most guitars in its class/price range, but it is definitely not a musical instrument. More made for fun/horsing around. If I had it to do over, I probably would just purchase one of those paper guitars that plays music - for the age my kids are they seem to enjoy it better.

Great intro guitar
This is a great guitar for little ones. I bought this for my son's fifth birthday and am very impressed. It is the perfect size for him, is very realistic with a surprisingly decent sound, is durable enough that it can stand up to a five year old's handling, and yet cheap enough that if/when he breaks it I won't feel like I'm out some of his college savings. Make sure you have someone who knows how to tune a guitar, because it will not be tuned when it comes out of the box. Overall, a great guitar to test the interests of aspiring musicians.

ISchoenhut Acoustic Guitar
I bought it for my Grand-Sons 3rd Birthday. He played and sang I been working on the railroad. For the money the quality was good and I think it will last a long time. Better quality then I could have brought at a retail store for almost the same money.

Fun toy, not a great musical instrument
This guitar arrived packaged well, but when we opened it looked like it had been repaired. The neck had some obvious abrasions that had been repainted, so we wondered if it was a used guitar. It was impossible to tune the guitar where basic chords could be played. Despite all of that, the seven year old still seemed to enjoy the gift. For the price it was an ok toy, but I wouldn't expect it to be used for beginner music lessons.
