Cool Hand Luke, Deluxe Edition

This is a masterclass of acting. Paul Newman's "Cool Hand Luke" doesn't talk often (the much more gregarious Drag handles the talkin'), and yet manages to carry the entire film. His smiles, the way he walks, and the vivacious action of those slumped yet broad shoulders manage to say everything we need to know about him. He just vibrates with an energy of freedom -- that the other prisoners want to live off of, and the prison bosses want to snuff out.Without spoiling things, the end is bittersweet, but golly do I love it. Luke is practically an American -- shoot, vaguely Taoist-- hero to everyone except himself. He's living his life because "it's something to do." How irritating it must be for the bosses to have a prisoner with such unshakeable inner peace.

Cool Hand Luke is like a movie version of an old Merle Haggard song. Luke just won't be kept down whether it's in his best interest to stay down or not. In the end, the movie, Man gets Luke. But in life, Luke gets the man. It was fun to watch the battle play out.

Good movie and my friend loved it for his birthday present. Unfortunately the Blu Ray case was damaged when I received it. There was a hole punched right in Paul Newman's face. Very disappointing...
