First Light

Adventure + Mystery + Dogs
I am an eleven year old who loves to read. You might have been looking at this book in a bookstore or a library, but you aren't sure you're going to like First Light by Rebecca Stead. I would say you probably will. First, this book is a blend of mystery AND adventure. But, it's not like your everyday mystery book, like ABC Mysteries or Magic Treehouse. It's more like, you think you have figured everything out until you find that you are TERRIBLY wrong. The reason it's an adventure story is because the two main characters both live in Greenland, except one of them lives UNDER the ice. Both of them eventually find some way to get under the ice, or above the ice, where they can experience each other’s world. The two main characters find a connection later in the book, except that they are very different people. Peter lives in New York city and later moves to Greenland (temporarily). Thea is like an old-fashioned person, except she is a part of a matriarchal society living under the ice. If you want to know more, get the book--you will stay up all night reading it.

Another amazing work by Rebecca Stead
I've been reading to my nieces during the shutdown and have pretty much exhausted all the classics that I loved and wanted to share so I've been seeking more current work. Stumbled on Rebecca Stead after finding what looked like an interesting book at Costco. Enjoyed the "List of Things that Will Not Change" so much I started looking for what else Ms. Stead might have written and found "When You Reach Me." (HIGHLY recommended - not just for juveniles.). This is the third book we're reading, and it is yet another completely different style book - Ms. Stead does not write formula books! Each is unique and unusual; each with believable characters and realistic dialogue. This one takes place in a future that includes global warming and persecuted peoples but feels current and relatable. I think my nieces will enjoy this as much as they did the previous two. All three books are infused with subtle lessons of love and compassion without hitting you over the head with it. I always feel a bit teary eyed yet optimistic when I finish one of her books!

10 stars for First Light
First Light was written by Rebecca Stead who has written many more amazing books. This book mostly takes place in Greenland and New York. The two main characters are Peter and Thea who know nothing about each other and who live in different parts of the world, but nearing the end you’ll realize that they’re very close to each other. Peter’s father is an ice researcher and he worked in Greenland while their home is in New York. Thea lives in Greenland in a village called Grace Hope which was built in the ice where there is a freshwater lake. It is an unknown place to most people except to the ones who live there and to Peter’s mother.I was amazed at how somebody could write a book like this, it would have taken a lot of imagination and thinking. I don’t think I would ever have as much imagination as Rebecca Stead had to right that book. If you love reading books then First Light is a must read, it’s a book in a category of its own. I felt like I was in a dream while reading this book. I hope you feel the same when you read it. This book is too good to be rated only 5 stars so I’ll have to give it a ten or more.

Ehhh....
First off, the only reason I got book is because it was like 90 pages longer than City of Ember.Don't get me wrong, I liked the plot, but after reading it... I felt a little bit like- what? Trust me, do yourself a favor and read the description...Anyways, Peter and his parents go to Greenland because his father studies icebergs and snow, blah, blah, blah.Meanwhile, some hundred people have dug a big tunnel underground and have lights using how fireflies do they're lights. They are magic and all have dogs that sta with them... And the big secret is that...Also, there are no spaces, so some words were put together for no reason. I'm writing this book as a kindle user.Anyways, this book is predictable, and you know it. After reading the description and thought, oooh, cool. When I finished the book, I was like- duh!So, get yourself The City of Ember, and avoid evil people who are evil for no reason, glitches, digging through big icebergs, and confusing histories that revealed in the last four chapters.

Not just for kids!
I bought this for my grandaughter and decided to read it myself first. I know she will love it, because I couldn't put it down. I read it in one night. The author, Rebecca Stead, used to read Madeleine L'Engle books when she was younger, and uses bits of her books in the dialogue. I loved Madeleine's books as a child and this brought back good memories. The story is of a culture that existed under the earth for many generations, and 2 kids find their way to the surface. They meet another boy and life is never the same again. You must read this, no matter how old you are. It will make your day! And then you must get her other book, "When You Reach Me". They are both awesome books for 5th graders & up.

A book for all ages, not just young adults. Good depth of character with a message for all. Very enjoyable.

Wow! Amazing story!
I know I'm kinda late with this review - considering all the other reviews were years ago - Yet, I finished this book recently and Wow! what a thrilling read!I absolutely enjoyed First Light, and I must admit that Peter and Thea were both captivating characters. The journey to Greenland was captivating, and theunderground Journey through Thea's homeland was astonishing! I also loved that Thea finally discovered the 'outside world!'Therefore, I found it interesting how Rebecca Stead used 'Global Warming' in this book with a fresh, new perspective.Great read! Great author!- Joseph

Good book, odd formatting issue
The subject of the book was interesting and like the other Rebecca Stead books I've read it was hard to put down. One thing is that I read it on the Kindle and on every page there were words smashed together --typos I suspect. It was quite annoying and I suspect that a younger reader might find it hard to figure out.
