Do you enjoy theatre of the absurd?
If so you will enjoy these plays that combine political commentary with dry humor. The author's story is also interesting.

The dissident humorist writes
Well worth buying and reading.Havel's dry, political humour enlivens the book. And just to imagine that some of these plays were written in prison!

I just saw a marvelous, riveting, and beautifully absurd production of "The Garden Party" in Prague at the Estates Theater (famous for premiere of Mozart's "Don Giovanni".) It would, I think, be difficult to "get" Havel without an understanding of the political history of the Czechs/Eastern Europeans and without knowing Havel's critical role. Getting to see "The Garden Party" on stage was such a treat! I feel so fortunate.

Good writing-absurdist short comedic plays
Good writing. Havel is very intelligent and compassionate and his plays reflect that. His work does require some reading about the censorship of communist Chekeslovakia. But once you more fully understand, you understand why he received the nobel peace prize.

Havel Notentertaing reading
I had seen the" Memorandum" as a play and it was obscure and not engaging. . When I read the other plays, they were very dogmatic and not enjoyable. Well at least I have read them. Curiously Harold Pinter was a big fan of Havel's play. It is hard to see the connection.
