Nice Beginner Patterns
I initially found this book better for reference than tutorial and used a different book for the latter as I feel that this book does not always explain things clearly enough for absolute beginners. But the patterns are excellent and even though I've moved on in many respects, the dinosaur remains a hit among my loved ones, friends, acquaintances etc and it's requested again and again as a gift. It's actually been a handy measure of my accretion of skill!

worked well for me.
got this for the wife as she was interested in giving it go... she picked it up fast and has done all of bits since, keeps her busy and she enjoys doing it.

Not clear or organised for pure beginners
Not the best step by step instructions. It's hard to be completely clear on some of the instructions. Jumping back and forth to different parts of book to learn. Theres no step after step process, it takes you through multiple variations of steps for different designs without a simple basic run through of one task to create your first crochet square. Long winded and not simple enough. I used to collect a crochet weekly magazine that was so much clearer and easier to which you could enjoy the experience of getting started without having to learn unnecessary stages for more advanced learners. Not easy to navigate book. Takes far too long to understand one caption of text to do one simple procedure...

Reading ahead is key
A very nice book with detailed information about all the main aspects of crocheting, with a pleasing layout. As an absolute beginner it was useful to have the step by step guides, however I found I had to read ahead for a few sections for the first instructions to fully make sense. For instance, ‘making a stitch’ tells you to use what you’ve already created... but I found I hadn’t created anything yet. I found instructions on the next page that would’ve been handier to appear before ‘making a stitch’. You can’t just pick up the wool and start at step one without first reading a few sections ahead, which is a slight annoyance for people like me who want to just get stuck in. Definitely not a deal breaker though. Everything is in there and it’s a good resource for those with no previous experience, once you familiarise yourself with the content first.
