The Last Polar Bear

wonderful book with a great message
This is a wonderful book with a great message of environmental conservation. The illustrations are both cute, and therefore engaging for younger readers, but also authentic and educational. Woven throughout the story are factoids about the Arctic and its wildlife, the Inuit people, and climate change, which helps this book to serve as both a compelling storybook and a non-fiction text. The story itself has a magical, folklore-esque feeling and instructs readers both in the life of the Inuit characters and the saga of the nearly-extinct polar bears, plus gives a nod to the storytelling style of the first peoples of the Pacific Northwest. This is one of Jean Craighead George's last books and I think one of her best.

Beautiful book for early readers
My six-year-old brought this book home from the library. I stumbled over some of the names and a few foreign words, but faked my way through it (my six-year-old didn't know the difference anyway). Towards the end of the book her reactions almost brought me to tears. It is a very touching book, easy to read and understand.
