Go for the Gold, Atalanta! (Myth-o-Mania, 8)

Great book and series for kids! Cover had minor damage.
This is the book series that got my 8-year old into chapter books. He's on the 8th in the series in as many weeks. He comes home from school and immediately wants to read. I hear him laughing out loud as he reads on the couch or in his room. He reluctantly puts down whatever Myth-o-mania book he is reading to go to soccer practice. It's a great series to potentially catapult your kid into the next step of reading. It's an excellent introduction to Greek mythology to boot. The delivery of "Go For The Gold Atalanta" came sooner than expected... one day instead of the guaranteed 2-day delivery! However, there was some minor damage on the front cover. I thought about subtracting a star but I thought it would not be fair to the book and the author. It's still readable. And after all, we don't judge a book by the cover!

Great
It was a great action packed book and I love the idea of the story and series. I would recommend this book to fourth to fifth graders.

Finally--a Greek myth with ZERO romance!
I enjoyed this retelling of the myth of Atalanta. It is refreshing to find a Greek myth that isn't about a woman finding her "happily ever after" as a wife or being a "damsel in distress." Atalanta is portrayed as a three-dimensional, passionate athlete who works hard to help a friend in need. I do wish, however, the last paragraph in the Appendix didn't exist--it recounts a rosy-colored (and inaccurate) version of Melanion's attack on Atalanta as "they got married and lived happily ever after" instead of the actual truth based on primary sources. The author didn't need to add it, but the fact that it romanticizes violence against Atalanta makes it an uncomfortable (and unnecessary) appendix.

Like mythology? Like Humor? READ THIS SERIES!
This is such a funny, yet informational, spoof on the traditional myths. Read the whole series, starting with Have A Hot Time, Hades. My 5th grade students absolutely love these books and are very motivated to read!

Entertaining take on Greek myths
My 9 year old likes all the myth-o-mania books and re-reads them often. They tell the stories while entertaining the children with the narration.
