What are the shoulder buttons useful for?

nothing SEGA related, but it does make the controller extra useful for a retropie or emulation station controller :-) makes it work with arcade, snes, gba... and many other systems the standard controller would never work with.

how long is the cord?

It's just under 10 ft. And it's not flimsy either; it's very similar in quality to the original Genesis controllers.
