Great book
Yeah it has some flaws but only because science advanced over the last 100 yrs. Great original source. shortcomings are in the intro. It's all good.

Bill's Opinion
Very scholarly and extremely interesting. The roots (no pun intended) of modern civilization havemore to do with the potato than I could ever have imagined. The South American historical speculationsare riveting and with the more recent archeological discoveries in that part of the world this book'srelevance is more fascinating now than when it was written some 50 or so years ago. A classic in everysense of the word.

Very interesting and informative.
It's more scholarly than I expected, but a very interesting read nonetheless. So much information about a food that has meant so much for the survival of many cultures.

Waiting for the sequel about my French relatives - those cowards!!
It saddened me. This is my family you’re talking about! Years of indignity but finally, we are recognized!!!

I am a trifle peeved with those who are clearly lampooning this superb work of Solanum tuberosum scholarship in the review section. This book is no joke. Salaman has worked carefully to present the history of the most influential food crop in human history in an exciting and gripping manner. For anyone who has worked to write popular history about food crops, this is no easy task. Salaman has succeeded with exceptional vim and vigour. For those of you inclined to learn more about the food crop that will be the single most important food crop within the next 20 years (in terms of tonnage of production), I recommend reading this in conjunction with a) http://www.amazon.com/Potato-Biology-Biotechnology-Advances-Perspectives-ebook/dp/B001A4DX4K/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1455991402&sr=8-1&keywords=potato+biology (this is essentially the breviary of potato breeders and innovative cultivators), b) http://www.amazon.com/Insect-Potato-Perspectives-Biology-Management/dp/B00E3TETX8/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1455991402&sr=8-12&keywords=potato+biology, and c) http://www.amazon.com/Potato-Diseases-Avery-E-Rich/dp/0125874200/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1455991532&sr=8-11&keywords=potato+plant+pathology, and d) http://www.amazon.com/Notes-Potato-Watcher-University-Agriculture/dp/1585441546/ref=sr_1_19?ie=UTF8&qid=1455991603&sr=8-19&keywords=potato+agronomy (another beautifully written pop history book, especially with regard to the various lineages responsible for the potato diversity existing today).Always remember the old adage, "If you take care of the potatoes, they will take care of you."Be well.

Damaged Book and Asymmetrical printing!
₹ 4203 is a lot of money and it's shameful that you are selling books of such quality. The spine of the book is damaged as well as the pages are printed in an asymmetrical way.

GREAT AND ENGAGING CLASSIC STUDY
This is a great classic study, and I bought this because I had mislaid my own copy, first purchased in the 1970s.

Detailed, broad-ranging and readable.
The scope of this book covers a wide range of times historically and places globally. It is very entertaining, interesting and readable. There are some diagrams, eg botanical drawings, but not as many visuals - graphs, maps, etc. - as I'd like. The font is Times New Roman, so it heavy on the eye. Ideally, I would have liked to have this text on Kindle. There are, though, wide enough margins that you could jot some notes, should you wish. Not surprisingly, there are several chapters devoted to Ireland, with sound explanations given.

full of good things including potatoes
I am still reading this extraordinary book, full of good things including potatoes: history, ethnology, botany, horticulture. One of the best things I have ever encountered.
