Mostly Effective
There is not much to be said here; it certainly performs its function as a Knife block. 11 slots (17 including those for steak knives) is more than ample for all the knives you'll need in a well-equipped kitchen. I purchased mine in Walnut, and it is certainly a handsome color; other reviews have complained about stain missing in various places, but I see no evidence of that on mine. Well put-together, and heavy enough not to slide about on the counter. I noticed some folks complaining that the angle was too steep, but I happen to like that; it lets me leave the block far away across the counter, and yet still have the knives be reachable. This all said, I do have two complaints:1) The slot for the steel is very small. This is fine if you have a small steel, but I have a big thick calphalon one, and it simply does not fit. I am not sure how common thick steels are, but bear that in mind before you buy.2) The slots are perhaps a little too close for comfort. While my knives (mostly from the Calphalon LX series) don't quite touch at the handles, they do look rather crowded. This can make getting at knives with shorter handles a little difficult (if they are surrounded by a forest of longer knives), but this is little more than a minor, minor inconvenience. If you're looking for a high-capacity block, this is probably about as inexpensive as you can get (that still has horizontal slots, helpful for keeping your knives sharp).

Good quality for the price but...
For the price, you can't beat this knife block; it's solid & will last. I have one problem with it & it's not a little one: the top slot is the only one wide enough for a chef's knife. I have to move down a slot for my 12" slicing knife, which means it comes in touches the counter at all times. Not good on the knife & I have to be very careful when moving it.

Beautiful Wood
A beautiful butcher block and it holds all my knives. I like that the slots are horizontal instead of verticle making it easier to slip the knives in without cutting at the wood or dulling my knives. I would buy again.

it holds knives just fine.
Our sharpening rod doesn't fit in the hole designated for it. I had to put some olive oil down the hole for it to kind of fit. Drives my wife crazy that she has "smush" it into the hole. Other than that., it holds knives just fine.

its fine - just a knife
you get what you pay for, you can tell its stained wood. Mine was stained after it was put together can see where it wasn't stained. its fine - just a knife block

Great color and quality
Purchased this in the walnut color to replace my yellowy wooden Wustoff knife holder that was the same size. The color is a nice rich brown and the grain pattern is beautiful.

It's a piece of wood.
I doubt that it's a walnut. But it certainly has a walnut color. Sadly not evenly coated. Where two pieces are glued together there are spots where white wood is shining thru. Inside the knife holes they also forgot to paint it. So if you leave a one open you can see the white wood shining from another room.$50? I don't think so. Maybe $20.Not a great quality product. Considering that you can actually buy a whole set of knifes from a well known manufacturer with a better quality block for say $100.$50 should be flawless.
