As I get older, I'm more inclined to try new things, especially new flavors and new ways of using flavors together philosophically. Shiso is one great herb for adding flavor—something like a cross between mint, basil and a flower. It has too many uses to list here, but it's great for garnishing, flavoring, frying like tempura and wrapping around meat, seafood and sushi. Plants grow several feet tall. Germination isn't easy. To break their dormancy, you'll need to stratify the seeds by simulating weather. You can do this by soaking the seeds, placing them in a pot and transferring them every week between the freeze and the refrigerator. After a few cycles, place the pot in a warm area to aid germination. Perilla frutescens is a tropical annual that's very sensitive to cold temperatures. You'll receive 500 shiso seeds. This is half a gram measured by weight. The cultivar is Kaori Green. It's open pollinated. Not a hybrid. These seeds have been germination tested at 78 percent January 2018.
